Un hipermotor de respaldo era una unidad de hipermotor secundaria que se encontraba en la mayoría de las naves estelares. Por lo general, estos motores tenían poca potencia, eran lentos y anticuados. Los hipermotores de respaldo tenían un alcance de sólo diez años luz y, después de cada uso, la unidad tenía que ser reacondicionada en un astillero antes de seguir utilizándose. Sólo estaban destinados a ser utilizados en una situación de emergencia.[1]
