One glaring problem I’ve had with the original trilogy is that Kenobi/Yoda seemed to be setting Luke up for ultimate failure had he actually defeated Vader like they’d intended.
As we know, it wasn’t Luke who defeated Sidious but a returned Anakin Skywalker whose love for his son finally broke Sidious’ hold over him & saw him sacrifice his life to destroy him & save his child. Without Anakin’s critical intervention, Luke would have been helpless before Sidious’ power & died to his Force Lightning.
It was also Luke who shied away from Kenobi/Yoda’s intention of him defeating Vader in combat & instead chose to appeal to the good he still sensed within his father, a course of action that was ultimately vindicated & proved essential to his ultimate survival.
So what exactly did Kenobi/Yoda expect him to do about Sidious if he’d actually beaten Vader like they’d pushed him to? Sidious was on a whole other level above Luke in power & they knew it, especially Yoda who’d faced him directly in the past.
Seems to me that they really didn’t plan very far ahead & just expected him to wing it.
