Alright, so here we go. I've volunteered to kick things off for the book club for this time around. This week on the book club we're discussing "Splinter of the Mind's Eye," the early Star Wars Legends novel by Alan Dean Foster, who was also the ghostwriter of the novelization of the original "Star Wars" film and who also recently wrote the novelization of "The Force Awakens." This story focuses on Luke and Leia, who are looking to bring some new allies into the fold of the Rebel Alliance, only to find themselves trapped on a swamp planet and hunted by the fearsome Darth Vader.
So we'll go ahead and start with the usual sorts of questions and then if anyone has other thoughts or ideas, feel free to bring them up...
- What did you think of the author's writing style? Unlike some of the other books we've been reading recently, this seems to be a fairly straightforward narrative without a huge amount of POV shifts. Did you find the story easy to follow?
- What did you think of the characterization, particularly the two main characters, Luke and Leia?
- What did you think of the villains, both Captain-Supervisor Grammel and the book's portrayal of Darth Vader?
- What parts of the book were entertaining to you and what, if anything, do you feel didn't work for you?
- What do you think of the author's writing style as compared to other "Star Wars" titles?
- This story is also available in a comic format? Have you read the comic version and if so, how do you feel it compares with / holds up against the novel?
- Whereas the first two novels we read were part of the new canon, this title was a Star Wars Legends novel, and a rather early one to boot? Do you feel the Legends nature of the story affected your enjoyment of the title in any way?
- It's been stated that this book was originally intended to be written with an eye towards filming it as a low-budget sequel had the original "Star Wars" not been a huge success. Based on the story, do you think this likely and how might things be different today had this been the case?
- There are elements in the novel that seem to contradict certain things that would later be established, or even which had been established before, as outlined in the Behind the scenes section for the book's entry on Wookieepedia. Do you feel that this detracted from the novel in any way, or were you alright with it?
- How many stars out of five would you give the book?
