For me, it’s a bit complicated. Villains are many, and as such, they have a diverse set of backstories and motivations. Star Wars has many a villain, ranging from the redeemed (Mara Jade), the morally grey (Fetts), and some who were truly heroes in disguise (Revan). Ultimately, the villain must have clear motivations, have complex relationships with others, be multi-dimensional with distinct personality traits, have a compelling backstory, and a satisfying end. Of course, there are no shortages of templates for Star Wars villains, but most are still unique and not simple copies of one another.
