Honestly when i saw the movie when it was first released back on 05. there was no shaking the idea that Palpatine was simply revealing his true appearance. For a couple reasons. For ONE, HE WAS NOT BOTHERED AT ALL BY THE CHANGE, he seems very comfortable for a guy that had just been horribly disfigured by force lighting. SECONDLY,, you can almost "feel" it in the way it was presented that it was more of a reveal than a horribly disfigurement. THIRDLY It was clear even while being hit by his own force lighting,, he was mindful enough to be obviously manipulating Anakin. as though "playing the part". And FOURTHLY , If he had so much power both with the force and as emperor , why did he not have his face fixed. clearly the reconstructive technology was there. the answer is he used his natural appearance as a crutch to initially gain sympathy of the senate. and after he gained power there was no need for him to pretend about his appearance any more. ON a side note, his character reminds me of a scripture in the bible that refers to Satan at 2 Corinthians 11:14 " and no wonder, for Satan himself reshapes himself into an angel of light,
