Industrial Automaton (IA) was een van de twee grootste droidfabrikanten in het universum, de andere was Cybot Galactica. Samen werden deze fabrikanten de "Big Two" genoemd. IA produceerde diverse soorten droids, de bekendste en populairste was de R2 Astromech Droid.
Industrial Automaton werd meer dan 850 jaar voor de opkomst van het Galactic Empire gevormd door de samengang van Industrial Intellect en Automata Galactica. IA werd al snel een welvarend bedrijf en voerde de strijd tegen Cybot Galactica voor de controle van de droidmarkt. IA was een van de eerste Contributing Sponsors van de Corporate Sector Authority. De fabrikant had droidfabrieken op vele locaties, waaronder een in Rordis City op Nubia.
Industrial Automaton kreeg een monopolie-positie in handen op de droidmarkt met de productie van haar meest populaire creatie; de Astromech Droids. Hoewel de eerste versies te maken hadden met diverse problemen, werd IA's R2 Astromech Droid de meest geliefde droid van het universum. Het succes leidde al snel tot nieuwere Astromechs, hoewel de R5 Astromech Droid enorm flopte.
Ondanks de kleine tegenslagen hield IA een constante plaats binnen de droidmarkt, niet alleen dankzij de Astromechs. Industrial Automaton produceerde ook diverse Protocol Droids, Labor Droids en zelfs een paar droids die opgenomen werden in militaire functies.
