O motor de propulsão iônica de um Destróier Estelar classe Venator

Os motores iônicos (também chamados de motores de íons) eram um tipo comum de propulsor subluz. Os motores geravam partículas carregadas que eram lançadas da parte traseira da nave, produzindo impulso no processo. Ao contrário de muitos outros motores de espaçonaves, os motores iônicos não tinham peças móveis nem componentes de alta temperatura. Por isso, exigiam muito menos manutenção, sendo um fator de economia de tempo e dinheiro que os levou a serem usados expansivamente na Marinha Imperial. Notavelmente, muitos modelos de caças estelares na linha TIE foram equipados com motores iônicos duplos. O subproduto desses motores, a exaustão iônica, tornava a passagem de uma nave detectável por sensores.

Na época do conflito entre a Primeira Ordem e a Resistência, os Sistemas de Exércitos Sienar-Jaemus fabricavam vários modelos de motores iônicos, incluindo o SJAS-210 e o SJAS-200a.
