- "To the 212th!"
- ―Clone troopers at 79's, declaring a toast to the battalion
The 212th Attack Battalion, also designated as the 212th Republic Battalion, was a military battalion of the Grand Army of the Republic, a clone army engineered to serve the Galactic Republic. Led by Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and his subordinate, Clone Commander CC-2224 "Cody," the 212th fought against the droid forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems throughout the Clone Wars. By the third and last year of the conflict, the 212th led an invasion of the Separatist-controlled world of Utapau, engaging an army of battle droids while Kenobi hunted General Grievous in order to end the war. Although the Jedi Master completed his task by killing Grievous, he was ultimately betrayed by his soldiers upon the activation of Order 66, a protocol that called for the extermination of all Jedi. The clones failed to execute their former leader, however.
Following the proclamation of the New Order, the 212th was absorbed into the armed forces of the Galactic Empire. During their days in service to the new government, the battalion was dispatched to the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk where they suppressed an indigenous uprising. By then, their commanding officer was General Kahdah.
The 212th Attack Battalion was a military battalion that served within the Grand Army of the Galactic Republic, placed under the command of Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Marshal Commander CC-2224 "Cody," throughout the duration of the three-year pan-galactic Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, often serving alongside the 501st Legion, which was commanded by Kenobi's former Padawan, Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.
While serving under Master Kenobi, the 212th became known for their successful tactics and involvement in several major and historic engagements, such as the Battle of Christophsis, the Battle of Teth, and the Battle of Ryloth, where they fought alongside the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps led by Jedi General Mace Windu, and helped to secure a Republic victory, successfully liberating Ryloth from Separatist control, capturing Separatist Councilor Emir Wat Tambor, the foreman of the Techno Union. Later, the 212th saw action at the Second Battle of Geonosis, where they assisted in the destruction of a newly-constructed droid factory on Geonosis, and eventually managed to capture Poggle the Lesser, a member of the Separatist Council. The 212th also served alongside the 501st at the Battle of Umbara, where they assisted in retaking the planet Umbara. The 212th saw their final action of the war at the Battle of Utapau, where General Kenobi managed to defeat the infamous Separatist General Grievous.
However, during the Battle of Utapau and following Grievous's defeat, Darth Sidious—after defeating Jedi Masters Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Saesee Tiin, and Agen Kolar, with the help of Anakin Skywalker, who subsequently became Sidious's new apprentice and was given the Sith moniker Darth Vader—contacted Commander Cody, Kenobi's second-in-command, and commanded him to execute Order 66. Complying to his orders, Cody ordered an All Terrain Tactical Enforcer of the 212th to open fire upon his Jedi General, beginning the fall of the Jedi Order in the Great Jedi Purge.
After the end of the Clone Wars and the rise of the New Order in the Republic's stead, the 212th Attack Battalion went on to serve the armed forces of the Galactic Empire. In their service to the Empire, the battalion was dispatched to the planet Kashyyyk where they suppressed an uprising established by the planet's inhabitants.
Christophsis and Teth
The 212th was sent to Christophsis, where they fought alongside Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and the 501st Legion's Torrent Company under Captain Rex. During the initial start of the battle, the 212th and 501st attempted to ambush the droid army. However, the droids were tipped off by Asajj Ventress' spy, Sergeant Slick and were able to force the Republic to fall back to it's base. Cody and Rex were able to capture Slick, but not before he destroyed the base's gunships and AT-TEs. However, the heavy cannons were saved. Using the cannons, the 212th and the 501st were able to hold out until General Yoda arrived with reinforcements.
Following General Kenobi's negotiations with Jabba the Hutt, the 212th went to Teth to assist General Skywalker, Commander Ahsoka Tano and Torrent Company in rescuing Jabba's son, Rotta. The 212th were able to rescue the survivors on Teth and picked up General Skywalker and Commander Tano on Tatooine.
During the Ryloth campaign, the 212th's Ghost Company was sent to Nabat to secure the landing area. Upon their landing, Ghost Company moved into Nabat to take out a battery of 5 J-1 proton cannons. Despite an attack by a pack of starving Gutkurrs, Ghost Company was able to distract the battle droids while General Kenobi destroyed the cannons. After General Windu and the rest of the Republic's forces landed, Kenobi and the 212th were able to take the Jixuan desert and secure Ryloth's southern hemisphere.
The 212th was sent, along with the 501st, CC-1993's battalion, the 41st Elite Corps, and General Ki-Adi-Mundi to retake Geonosis. Kenobi and Cody's force of the 212th were first to land on Geonosis, while Skywalker's and Mundi's forces were forced to crash-land before reaching their landing zone. The 212th were able to use their gunships and AT-TE's to create a circle to protect them from the Geonosians' forces until Skywalker's and Mundi's forces arrived.
After the destruction of the primary droid foundry, a platoon of the 212th accompanied Cody, Skywalker and Kenobi as they searched for General Luminara Unduli and Lord Poggle in the catacombs beneath the Progate Temple. They came under attack by Geonosian zombies under Queen Karina the Great. Together, they were able to rescue Unduli, capture Poggle, and bury the queen alive during their escape.
The 212th later assisted Kenobi aboard the Arquitens-class light cruiser Surrogator on the rescue of General Eeth Koth. Obi-Wan created a plan to lure the General into his ship while Skywalker and General Adi Gallia rescued Koth. When they arrived near Grievous' fleet, all remaining ships starting firing with the exception of the Surrogator, so that Grievous would take the bait. Cody and his troopers were able to take Grievous' commando droids, albeit a few losses, while Kenobi engaged the General himself. However, Grievous managed to escape the fight and ordered the destruction of the Surrogator. Cody and a few troopers engaged Grievous, attempting to keep him in place, but the ship's destruction forced them to let him escape to Saleucami's surface.
Obi-Wan, now commanding both the 212th and the 501st, landed on the planet and ordered his troops to head to the wreckage of the Separatist ship Grievous used to escape. The 212th inspected the crash site and realized the incident hadn't happened long ago. While the 212th would remain inspecting the area, a few 501st troopers, including Rex, went to patrol a nearby wetland and to warn the rest of the forces if they spotted Grievous. The 212th found a suitable droid for inspection on one of the ship's escape pods and were able to pinpoint the locations of the other pods, one of which was found by nightfall, albeit deserted. The 501st troopers (with the exception of an injured Rex) were summoned to help engage the droids at the last escape pod. They were able to find Grievous and battle his forces. When a shuttle came to rescue the General, Kenobi ordered his AT-TEs to shoot it down, but they weren't able to stop Grievous' escape.
Several members of the 212th went with Cody, Kenobi, Skywalker and Captain Rex to Lola Sayu. Their mission was to rescue General Even Piell and Captain Wilhuff Tarkin from the Citadel. To enter the planet, the entire rescue team was put under carbon freezing to avoid the life scans of the facility. Once inside, the 501st trooper Charger accidentaly alerted the enemy forces of the Republic presence through his death. On the way to find Piell, the 212th trooper Longshot was killed by an electric field. Upon finding the prisoners, Piell joined Obi-Wan's forces while Tarkin stayed with Anakin's.
The 212th, along with the 501st went to Umbara. Its mission was capture the Capital while the 501st dealt with the local militia. During the battle, a platoon under Waxer were informed by General Pong Krell that the Umbarans were disguised as clones. Waxer's platoon fought the 501st until Rex stopped the fighting. After Waxer died, the remaining members of his platoon assisted the 501st in arresting Dogma and capturing General Krell. Despite Krell's betrayal, the 212th were able to take the capital. The 212th then went to Kiros where they surrounded the Governor's tower and received a message from the Separatist Commander, Darts D'Nar.
The final days
Near the end of the war, during the Outer Rim Sieges, the 212th were joined by the 501st in attacking a Separatist stronghold on Yerbana. Each battalion attacked one side of a bridge. Neither group could find the tactical droid, and the 212th was suffering heavy casualties. General Kenobi saved Cody from an explosive, and he along with the surviving troops took cover. At that time, the 501st arrived, having finished their side of the battle. With a succesful distraction, Anakin made the tactical droid show up and destroyed it, allowing both the 501st and 212th to advance towards the enemy troops, winning the battle.
Later, the 212th took part in the Battle of Utapau, in order to try to defeat General Grievous once and for all. Obi-Wan went to Utapau in advance to confront the General and allow his Batallion to surprise attack the enemy forces. The plan was succesful, and Kenobi was able to kill Grievous. However, it was not long before the Great Jedi Purge began and Commander Cody received Order 66. He ordered an AT-TE to fire upon their Jedi General, Obi-Wan Kenobi, though he survived falling a great distance, and evaded probes sent by the clones for confirmation of death.
