2X-3KPR was a KPR security droid that belonged to the Lars family on the planet Tatooine. In 9 BBY, it stood outside the Lars Homestead on alert conditions when the former Inquisitor Reva Sevander arrived in search of the Lars's adopted son, Luke Skywalker. Years later in 0 BBY, the droid rolled past Skywalker and the protocol droid C-3PO as they searched for the astromech droid R2-D2 outside the homestead.
Biography[]
2X-3KPR[2] was a KPR security droid that belonged to the Lars family,[1] who used it as a perimeter droid[2] at their homestead on the desert planet Tatooine.[1] In 9 BBY,[3] the droid stood stationary outside the homestead with it's dome lit yellow when the Jedi-in-hiding Obi-Wan Kenobi approached the structure and left a toy T-16 skyhopper outside for Luke Skywalker, the adopted son of the homestead's owners, Owen Lars and Beru Lars.[4] It was also stood outside the house lit yellow on another night,[5] shortly before Owen learned that the former Inquisitor Reva Sevander was on Tatooine searching for Skywalker.[6]
Knowing Reva would come to the homestead,[6] Owen and Beru prepared for attack and set 2X-3KPR on alert conditions that it announced by having its warning dome lit red.[2] When Reva did arrive that night she passed the red-lit droid outside the homestead, after which a perimeter alarm sounded within the homestead, warning Owen and Beru of Reva's approach. After Reva fought her way past his parents, Skywalker fled from the homestead past 2X-3KPR. By the time Kenobi arrived to help Beru and Owen search for Luke, the droid had moved from the spot where it had stood stationary.[6]
In 0 BBY,[7] the droid rolled passed Skywalker and the protocol droid C-3PO as Skywalker used his macrobinoculars to search for the missing astromech droid R2-D2 in the night. The next day, Skywalker and C-3PO left the homestead to search for R2-D2, after which Imperial stormtroopers arrived searching for C-3PO and R2-D2. The Imperials killed Owen and Beru, prompting Skywalker to depart Tatooine[1] and leave the homestead abandoned for many years.[8]
Behind the scenes[]
2X-3KPR first appeared in the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope[1] in a scene filmed on March 22, 1976 at the homestead set in the salt flats of Nefta, Tunisia.[9] The droid was first identified in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was named as "2X-3KPR" on a card in the 1995 Premiere Limited set of cards for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game made by Decipher, Inc.[10] In the current Star Wars canon, the StarWars.com episode guide for the third episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series confirmed that perimeter droid seen in the show was the same one seen in A New Hope. The guide identified the droid as "2X-K3PR;" however, as it also explicitly stated that the droid's designation originated on the Decipher card,[2] this article assumes 2X-K3PR to be a typo and that the original Legends spelling is correct.
