3224 was an elevator located aboard the Providence-class Dreadnought Invisible Hand, and could be entered from the Wizard's Tower at the top of the dreadnought's spire.[2] In 19 BBY,[1] during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, after killing Separatist leader, Count Dooku, and rescuing Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine from custody during the space battle above the planet Coruscant, attempted to use 3224 to return to the lower levels of the craft.[2]
However, during the battle, the elevator was no longer operating and forced Skywalker to order his astromech droid, R2-D2, to reactivate it. While R2 attempted to reactivate the elevator, the Invisible Hand lost stability during a broadside battle with the Venator-class Star Destroyer Guarlara and resulted in the astromech falling downward within the dreadnought's main hangar, away from the controls.[2]
Nonetheless, Palpatine and Skywalker (the latter of whom carrying an unconscious Obi-Wan Kenobi after being knocked out during the duel with Dooku), were able to enter the elevator shaft as the ship began its plummet. As a result, they were able to run through the shaft as it was facing horizontally. Once General Grievous ordered his crew to fire the ship's emergency booster engines, the ship leveled out. This forced Skywalker to grab ahold of a cable protruding from the wall to stop him from falling as the shaft was now back to vertical, with Palpatine hanging onto him. During that time, Kenobi regained consciousness, being notably surprised at where he was. At that moment, the party noticed the elevator itself rapidly descending towards them. Skywalker frantically tried to contact R2-D2 over the comlink to shut it down. With not enough time, Kenobi ordered Skywalker and Palpatine to drop down in an attempt to escape. Kenobi and Skywalker both used their grapple cables to swing themselves and Palpatine out of the shaft at the next open door, narrowly avoiding the passing elevator.
