- "Time to taste the vacuous caress of the beyond ahead of schedule, organ sacks!"
- ―5A-G3 to their combatants, while fighting on Bracront
5A-G3, or Fiveay-Jeethree, was a droid active during the High Republic Era. Following the Starlight Beacon space station's fall in 230 BBY, they worked with the Jedi Knight Qort and the Force-sensitive Mikkian Zeen Mrala to search for the pair's missing friend, Jedi Padawan Lula Talisola. 5A-G3 developed a spy network—the Eriadu droid intelligence squad—alongside the pilot Argomon and B-333 to track Nihil marauder movements to find leads in their search. In 229 BBY, the droid accompanied Mrala and Qort to the Outer Rim planet Eriadu and later followed them to the Outer Rim moon Bracront to pursue a lead on Talisola's whereabouts.
While on Bracront, the droid enjoyed fighting alongside Qort in a skirmish to storm the Nihil fortress. 5A-G3 fled with the group—and Talisola, who had been operating on the world as a warlord named Tartak Vil. Following the droid's return to Eriadu, she met the former Padawan Ruu, wishing to flirt with him. Afterward, the droid introduced a group of Jedi to B-333 and Argomon before the latter pair left to place a tracking device on the Nihil prison ship Korvix Vorn. When the technology pinpointed the Korvix Vorn's location, 5A-G3 participated in an attack on the vessel to rescue any Jedi prisoners aboard, while also intending to sabotage the vessel and destroy it. After helping a boarding party secure the prison ship's topside cannons, the droid and Argomon rigged the Korvix Vorn to explode, fleeing from the vessel with B-333 after joining the rest of their colleagues aboard their ship.
On Eriadu, 5A-G3 helped their colleagues attempt to reclaim the Padawan Academic Cruiser Star Hopper from the Nihil, though the attempt ultimately failed, and also participated in a game with their allies. Afterward, with Eriadu now in the Occlusion Zone, 5A-G3 accompanied their associate Sevran Tarkin and several of their other colleagues into Seswenna Hall to address the Ruling Council. When Sevran later distanced herself from the droid and her other colleagues following the Nihil's invasion of Eriadu, 5A-G3 sent spies after the former and assisted with luring Sevran's pet veermok—Balinta—away from her owner. 5A-G3 and her allies released Balinta and followed her to Sevran's location, detaining several Nihil in the process.
Biography[]
Combating the Nihil[]
Searching for a friend[]
- "A warlord on the remote moon of Bracront has been transmitting that message for weeks.[…] The Padawans assigned to monitor chatter while you're on attack runs didn't think it had much promise."
- ―5A-G3 to Zeen Mrala, about one of many open cases they hoped would locate Lula Talisola
5A-G3, also known Fiveay-Jeethree, was a droid active by the time of the High Republic Era. Following the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station by Nihil marauders[2] in 230 BBY,[4] they[1] began working with the Jedi Knight Qort and the Force-sensitive Mikkian Zeen Mrala.[5] 5A-G3 began running weekly reports compiling all currently open cases that might contain clues to the whereabouts of Mrala and Qort's friend—Jedi Padawan Lula Talisola—who had been declared missing and was presumed dead in the aftermath of the station's fall.[2] The droid also made the acquaintance of the pilot Argomon and the droid B-333, working with the pair to monitor Nihil activity[6] by leading a spy network[7] called the Eriadu droid intelligence squad[3] to find the Nihil prison ship Korvix Vorn in the hopes of some of the prisoners aboard being captured Jedi.[6]
As their group worked through and discarded cases that came up without new information, 5A-G3 continued the search for Talisola, occasionally alongside Padawans, who helped monitor incoming intel. The droid continued aggregating relevant cases while Mrala was away on attack runs against the Nihil, assisting in the Galactic Republic's fight against the marauders on the borders of the Occlusion Zone, a region of space sealed behind a seemingly impenetrable barrier called the Stormwall that only Nihil ships could pass through. In one instance, 5A-G3 became aware of a Nihil warlord operating on[2] the Outer Rim[8] moon Bracront, who began broadcasting that they had "what the Mikkian wants." However, when the Padawans monitoring Mrala's chatter regarded the intel as useless, the droid similarly put the case aside.[2]
Arkorayal Cantina[]
- "Did you?! Fiveay-Jeethree, I swear on every single star if you—"
"The new faces in the holos tonight?? Zeen, I would never." - ―Zeen Mrala and 5A-G3, about Lula Talisola's figure appearing amongst the presumed dead and confirmed deceased holograms
After one of Mrala's missions[2] in 229 BBY,[4] the droid accompanied the pair to[2] the Outer Rim planet[9] Eriadu's Bri Phrang City and waited outside[2] the Arkorayal Cabaret Cantina, a Republic Defense Coalition outpost[6] established to intercept Nihil leaving the Occlusion Zone. While there, Mrala sang a Corellian funeral shanty inside the establishment to honor the lives lost during the Starlight Beacon's fall the year before. As Mrala sang, surrounded by the holograms of several Jedi killed or flagged as missing during the event. Mrala was stunned upon seeing Talisola's likeness appear as one of the figures for the first time, assuming 5A-G3 had altered the holos.[2]
The Mikkian rushed outside to confront 5A-G3, who was singing to themselves outside. The droid informed Mrala that the hologram's addition to the usual lineup of Jedi figures had not been of their doing, continuing to ramble as their companion's distress increased. However, the cantina employee Jackaby informed Mrala that the addition had been done automatically, as Republic protocol would declare individuals dead if missing and presumed to have passed away for over a year. Outside the cantina, 5A-G3 announced[2] her[1] arrival to Mrala and Qort as they conversed, and when they began to speak in the Aloxian language to evade the droid, she primly informed them that she also spoke the language.[2]
The droid activated their holoprojector, displaying open cases that might lead to the location of Talisola and the other Jedi missing. Mrala thanked the droid but instructed all the cases to be recalled—even the previously discarded—to ensure nothing had been missed. 5A-G3 obliged, and Mrala found numerous scams and trap cases before eventually stumbling upon a file detailing a Nihil warlord from Bracront who had been broadcasting that they had "what the Mikkian wants" for some weeks. When the droid revealed that the Padawans monitoring Mrala's chatter had discarded the intel, the Mikkian was frustrated that she had not already gone and killed the marauder.[2]
Fortress on Bracront[]
- A Mikkian civilians: "If we have your help, we could storm the fortress! Should we do it?"
- Qort: "N—"
- Zeen Mrala: "Absolutely!"
- 5A-G3: "Yes. 100% yes."
- ―A Mikkian, Qort, Zeen Mrala, and 5A-G3, on Bracront[2]
5A-G3 briefed Mrala on the Bracront situation and why the Nihil was not the Republic's top priority—due to the warlord not causing much trouble and being protected by the moon's local populace. Mrala decided to travel there aboard a ship with Qort and the droid. After arrival, 5A-G3 followed the pair onto Bracront's surface and were met by a crowd[2] of impoverished and destitute[10] Mikkians, all drawn there by the same broadcast. Mrala was annoyed that all of them had come for the same reason, though the droid pointed out that their group had done the same.[2]
5A-G3 supported Mrala's wish to storm the fortress where the Nihil warlord was taking shelter despite Qort's protests. The droid eagerly jumped into the fight and gleefully insulted the Pau'ans they were attacking while wielding their circular blade. Mrala stormed her way to the top of the compound, discovering—to her shock—that the moon's Nihil warlord was Talisola, dressed in full marauder attire.[2] Meanwhile, 5A-G3 and Qort prevented the enraged Mikkians from following Mrala, resulting in the droid consuming three fingers of one of the crowd members. Afterward, the group fled the world on their ship with Talisola, narrowly escaping the angered civilians chasing them.[11]
Plans on Eriadu[]
- "This is Bee-Triple-Three. He's been working on a black market hauler for the Nihil, which allows him to get in and out of the Occlusion Zone and keep tabs on things for me."
- ―5A-G3 introducing B-333 to their colleagues
Following their return to Eriadu's Arkorayal Cabaret Cantina, 5A-G3 met with Talisola and Mrala to inform them that they were due on stage to perform soon with a guest performer.[6] The droid then conversed with the visiting operative Crash Ongwa, interrupting her conversation with Talisola to inform the operative that her bodyguard, the former Padawan Ruu, was unnerving the establishment's patrons. When 5A-G3 inquired about flirting with Ruu, Ongwa paused and indicated they would have to ask him directly.[12]
Eventually, 5A-G3 left the cantina and spectated a lightsaber duel between Talisola and her Master, Kantam Sy. Afterward, 5A-G3 introduced the Jedi present to B-333 and Argomon, detailing how they could help the Jedi and the Republic gain intel on the Korvix Vorn when it made a supply run outside the Occlusion Zone by using their black market hauler to gain access. The pair then left the Jedi[6] and followed 5A-G3's instructions to plant a tracking device on the Nihil vessel. Argomon then departed the Korvix Vorn[7] and left B-333 behind as part of 5A-G3's eventual plan to sabotage the prison ship,[3] returning to Eriadu. When the tracking device succeeded in pinpointing the Korvix Vorn's location not long afterward[7] in 228 BBY,[13] Argomon and B-333 informed 5A-G3 of the development.[7]
Korvix Vorn raid[]
- "Five-ay…did you?!"
"I had to go retrieve my asset! I figured I'd leave some gifts behind courtesy of the Eriadu droid intelligence squad, is all." - ―Zeen Mrala and 5A-G3, after the latter and Argomon exploded the Korvix Vorn
Afterward, 5A-G3 attended a meeting hosted by the Republic Defense Coalition consisting of several Jedi and Republic operatives in Eriadu's outpost to discuss how to infiltrate the ship and rescue any Jedi trapped aboard. Once assigned roles for the endeavor, the group disbanded and prepared for the raid.[7] Having assumed the mission objective included destroying the Korvix Vorn after rescuing its prisoners, 5A-G3 and Argomon worked together to formulate a plan to explode the vessel and reunite with B-333.[3]
The droid, Mrala, Talisola, and Argomon then traveled in a ship to the Korvix Vorn's location. After weaving through the surrounding fighting vessels, they landed in the prison ship's hangar using Argomon's access card. Meanwhile, the operator of the Korvix Vorn, a disgraced Nihil enforcer known as "The Warden," jettisoned the vessel's prisoners into space and left them to die.[7] The group joined other Jedi as part of a boarding party and headed toward the Korvix Vorn's lower cannons but quickly redirected to deactivate the vessel's topside blister bomb armaments to assist the efforts of the Jedi and Republic Defense Coalition forces fighting in space outside. 5A-G3 used their sawblades to slice off the limbs of Nihil in the cannon station, succeeding in securing the area with the rest of their boarding party.[3]
When several Jedi and Mrala began acquiring oxygen tanks to rescue the prisoners floating in space outside, 5A-G3 and Argomon broke off from the group and promised to meet them back on their ship. 5A-G3 and Argomon collaborated to sabotage the Korvix Vorn and rig it to detonate, reuniting with B-333 during their efforts. Afterward, they joined Mrala, Talisola, and several others aboard the group's ship. As they flew away, the vessel exploded in flames, much to the shock of the Jedi and rescued prisoners aboard. 5A-G3 informed those present that they had always intended to destroy the Korvix Vorn, leading everyone to sigh in relief and hug each other. The droid returned to Eriadu with their colleagues and rescued prisoners, grateful to be headed home.[3]
Star Hopper chase[]
- Farzala Tarabal: "Hey! Don't think you're gonna have all the fun without us!"
- Qort: "The Star Hopper was our home too!"
- 5A-G3: "And don't think you're going to leave your favorite chaos droid behind when there's the possibility of carnage and mayhem!"
- ―The Jedi Farzala Tarabal and Qort and 5A-G3 as they insisted on helping Lula Talisola reclaim the Star Hopper[14]
After returning to Eriadu, 5A-G3 joined several Jedi and Republic colleagues for a game involving scoring pucks into illuminated goals. However,[14] Jedi Master[15] Yoda contacted the group via hologram and informed them they needed to evacuate because the Stormwall had expanded and left Eriadu at the border of Republic space. However, the Padawan Academic Cruiser Star Hopper—which The Warden had commandeered—arrived in Eriadu's atmosphere for an attack to scare those at the Republic outpost. When Talisola rushed to reclaim the ship, as it had been her and her colleagues' former home, 5A-G3 insisted on not being left behind.[14]
The droid and several others flew toward the Star Hopper in a flying speeder, with 5A-G3 interrupting Talisola and Mrala's flirting to point the most optimal time for them to strike the Academic Cruiser. 5A-G3 continued flying the speeder underneath the vessel, assuming that her colleagues may need a backup plan if something went awry. When the Star Hopper fled to hyperspace shortly afterward, 5A-G3 maneuvered the speeder to catch their colleagues from the sky, as they had fallen off the Star Hopper's hull when it pulled away. Though most of the group was disappointed with their failed attempt to reclaim the vessel, Talisola pointed out that they had succeeded in carrying out psychological warfare by scaring the Nihil away. As 5A-G3 listened, they steered the speeder down to Eriadu's surface to allow its passengers to disembark and begin another round of their game.[14]
Trapped behind the Stormwall[]
Seswenna Hall and blockade[]
- "Hey! I said only two representatives of the Repu—"
"I don't represent the Republic! I represent the void." - ―A security guard and 5A-G3 in Seswenna Hall
Following this, the Occlusion Zone expanded again, enveloping Eriadu, and 5A-G3 was present on Eriadu with their colleagues during this time. In Eriadu City, the group went to Seswenna Hall with their associate Sevran Tarkin to address the Ruling Council to speak in favor of the Republic's interests prior to an impending Nihil invasion. 5A-G3 followed Mrala and Tarkin deeper into the building, side-stepping the security guard that attempted to stop her and chopping off the end of the guard's blaster. Upon the arrival of Sevran's brother, Navaj Tarkin, 5A-G3 expressed their appreciation of his entrance to Seswenna Hall. The group eventually fled the venue following a group of Nihil's arrival and the marauder organization's subsequent invasion of Eriadu.[16]
The Nihil's blockade around Bri Phrang City caused severe supply shortages, only temporarily alleviated by a shipment of supplies brought to the city by Ongwa's crew.[17] As their resources dwindled, 5A-G3 attended a meeting to discuss their next move against the occupiers. Though Ongwa indicated they would need to attack another convoy soon, the droid felt it would be difficult given the strength of the blockade around the city. Not long after, Sevran usurped Tragkul as head of the Tarkin family[18] and distanced herself from her Republic colleagues.[19]
Veermok adventures[]
- "Have you seen her, Fiveay? Hm?"
"Do you enjoy having hands, Sevran? If yes, I strongly recommend you remove them from my delicate carapace." - ―Sevran Tarkin and 5A-G3, about the former's missing veermok
5A-G3 and the others she was working with were confused as to why, with the droid attending a secret gathering to discuss the matter. Ongwa attended the meeting via a hologram displayed from 5A-G3, while the others moved to face each other. While Ongwa unsuccessfully attempted to have Sevran spied on, 5A-G3 continued working with numerous of her own spies throughout Bri-Phrang to gain intel on the situation.[19]
The droid ultimately indicated that their efforts had not resulted in much usable information, despite the efforts of several spies, and Ongwa reported the same. The group realized that one predictable aspect about Sevran was her attachment to her pet veermok, Balinta. They then subsequently lured Baltina away to Lady Krevlin Tarkin's greenhouse with thrumfrogs so that they could later release her, since the creature would always return to its owner's side, thus leading them to Sevran.[19]
Upon finding Balinta missing, Sevran panicked and confronted 5A-G3, Qort, Mrala, and Talisola, though each denied knowing the veermok's whereabouts. When Mrala inquired how Sevran could have misplaced such a large creature, the droid quipped that she should ask[19] the Jedi Knight[20] Bell Zettifar[19]—referring to when he had been separated from his close friend, the Wookiee Jedi Knight Burryaga Agaburry—[20] though the rest of the group glared at 5A-G3 for the comment. Sevran began roughly shaking 5A-G3 and inquiring about Balinta's whereabouts, though the droid threatened her in return, saying she should take her hands off her carapace.[19]
Catwalk attack[]
- "Fiveay, stay here and keep an eye on these thugs."
"Yay!"
"Do not dump them in the lava."
"Boo." - ―Qort and 5A-G3, after capturing some Nihil
Not long after, 5A-G3 had Sevran followed, though the latter eventually shook off those following her. The droid then called Qort via comms to set Baltina free, which he and the Sevran's cousin Emelsine Tarkin then did. 5A-G3 followed the pair as they chased the veermok through the streets of Bri Phrang City, eventually ending up a turbolift leading under the Arkorayal Cabaret Cantina. Several Nihil ambushed the trio in the tunnel they entered, prompting the droid and Qort to attack the marauders and tie them up on a catwalk. 5A-G3 remained with the captured Nihil to watch them, saddened that Qort instructed her not to dump them into some nearby lava.[19]
Around this time, the Jedi Master Elzar Mann sent numerous EX droids through the Stormwall, having learned from the Jedi Master Porter Engle that the centuries-old technology could make it across the barrier. The droids were sent to worlds that Jedi had been known to be operating on from within Nihil territory, one of which was Eriadu. A spy working for 5A-G3 found an EX droid after seeing it fall from the sky, giving it to the latter. 5A-G3 brought it to Qort and the pair watched the droid play a holographic message of Mann's, asking them to record a status update on their situation and send the EX droid back across the Stormwall. Qort pressed record, explaining the incident with the veermok, the current political state on Eriadu, and 5A-G3's involvement in recent events.[19]
Characteristics[]
Personality[]
- "Your creepy bodyguard is unnerving the customers with his perplexing eyes and chaotic smile."
"Okay, and?"
"Permission to flirt with him?" - ―5A-G3 and Crash Ongwa
Though 5A-G3 cared about Mrala and Qort, she considered all organic beings to be temporary "organ flesh sacks" who would someday meet their end in the void.[2] They enjoyed the company of many of their other colleagues,[6] including B-333, whom the droid took care to rescue from the Korvix Vorn with Argomon.[3] By the time of the Nihil conflict, the droid was loyal to the Jedi and the Republic and worked actively with them against the Nihil.[7] However, upon inquiry, 5A-G3 affiliated herself more strongly with "chaos" than the Republic.[16] Despite challenging conditions she often operated under, the droid took pride in maintaining a competent network of spies that provided useful information.[19]
She enjoyed thinking about the concept of death, considering it an "infinite finale" and a "caress of the beyond." When given the option, the droid enjoyed engaging in[2] and threatening violence to others.[19] The droid became known among their colleagues as a "multi-hyphenate chaotic droid."[7] 5A-G3 liked Ruu when he visited Eriadu and wished to flirt with him, finding the former Padawan's swirling black eyes mesmerizing.[12] Navaj Tarkin also caught 5A-G3's attention, commenting on him to her colleagues.[16] She enjoyed teasing Mrala and Talisola about their feelings for one another[6] and also expressed pride in the work they did to help others, often pointing out the impact their assistance had.[7]
The droid was unwilling to let those she cared about go into danger alone, both to protect them and to not miss out on the opportunity for potential chaos and violence which they greatly enjoyed.[14] She held particular distaste for the Nihil and did not care if they died in painful ways, such as pushing the marauders into lava.[19] 5A-G3 was willing to operate outside of official mission parameters, opting to strike blows against the Nihil and rationalize them as assuming that their endeavors had been the endeavor's intent.[3] [19]
Physical traits[]
- "I speak Aloxian, I'll have you know. And yes, my timing is impeccable, thank you. Always. Anyway, I thought it might cheer Master Zeen up to go through the list of open cases I aggregate weekly that may hold some clue as to the whereabouts of Padawan Talisola and the others."
"Thank you! But don't stop there. Pull up all the cases we've discarded since we began the search. We might've missed something." - ―5A-G3 and Zeen Mrala
5A-G3 had orange sensors, silver-and-blue plating, and a rectangular base. The droid also possessed two jointed limbs ending in claws and one curved smaller limb. She was equipped with a holoprojector that could project both maps[2] and holograms of individuals.[19] She two silver-colored circular, spinning sawblades as weapons that extended from her clawed limbs, each bearing several sharp ridges. These limbs were sharp enough to slice through both organic limbs[3] and metal weapon barrels.[16] 5A-G3's head was extendable to at least double her normal height[14] and the droid's programming allowed them to speak at least two languages, Aloxian and Galactic Basic.[2]
They were capable of aggregating inputs of data case files[2] and piloting a speeder.[14] 5A-G3 successfully operated a network to track Nihil activity,[7] which consisted of numerous spies carrying out high-level duties.[19] As part of their work, they proved capable of sabotaging vessels such as the Korvix Vorn, resulting in its destruction, and engaging in close-quarters combat.[3] Aside from their technical skills, 5A-G3 considered themselves an entertainment and gastronomical droid.[12]
Behind the scenes[]
Milestones[]
- "5A-G3, the chaotic she/they droid who ponders their place in the vast cosmos, is joining my best girl zeen mrala in phase iii of THRA"
- ―Sage Groves, whom 5A-G3's creation was inspired by
5A-G3 was a character created for the 2023 comic-book series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures, released as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase III.[5] They first appeared in the first issue of the series, which was written by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire, and released by Dark Horse Comics[2] on December 6, 2023.[5] 5A-G3 was first pictured in a StarWars.com post documenting the Lucasfilm panel's San Diego Comic-Con reveal of the issue's cover artwork on July 21 of the same year.[21] The publisher's summary for the issue mistakenly referred to the droid as "5AG3."[22]
5A-G3 was first identified by name in a StarWars.com post discussing details about the then-upcoming Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures series on September 18, 2023.[5] The droid also appeared in the first issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Dispatches from the Occlusion Zone comic miniseries, which was written by Older, illustrated by Paris Alleyne, and released by Dark Horse[19] on October 9, 2024 as part of The High Republic's Phase III.[23] The day before the issue's release, Alleyne released several uncolored pages of the comic on social media, including several sketched panels featuring 5A-G3.[24]
Inspiration and design[]
- "chatting with @harveytolibao about his design for 5A was soooo amazing:)) funny story— harvey based 5A's design off of a espresso bean grinder, not knowing that at the time i first started chatting with @djolder about being a writer, i was working as a barista. full circle moment"
- ―Sage Groves, on 5A-G3's design
As confirmed by the comic series' artist Harvey Tolibao[26] and Older,[27] 5A-G3's creation was inspired by Sage Groves,[1] a creator who worked as the literary assistant of Older and Star Wars author Alyssa Wong.[28] Groves considered the addition of a Star Wars character based on her one of the highlights of their year, alongside helping edit[29] The High Republic: Escape from Valo, a Star Wars: The High Republic junior novel authored by Wong and Older[15] that was released on January 30, 2024.[30]
The editor confirmed 5A-G3's pronouns as "she/they," intended to be used interchangeably.[1][31] 5A-G3's pronouns mirror those used by Groves,[28] and the droid's name is a leet speak on the editor's name.[31] Tolibao created 5A-G3's design, basing her off of an espresso coffee bean grinder. Groves spoke to him about the design, finding the artist's inspiration for the droid's depiction amusing, as he had not known she had been working as a barista when she first began speaking with Older.[25] Upon 5A-G3's debut, the editor showcased a copy of the issue featuring the custom artwork of the droid doodled on a plastic cover holding a copy of the first issue of The High Republic Adventures.[1] Groves has also noted their hope for 5A-G3 to make future appearances in Star Wars media.[32]
