"You there! Can I interest you in a juicy ronto wrap? Best in this quadrant!"
―8D-J8 offers a ronto wrap to Remex Io[src]

8D-J8 was an 8D-series smelter droid who worked in the restaurant Ronto Roasters in Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, turning the spit that cooked meat under the podracer engine roaster in the middle of the restaurant.[3]

The droid was programmed by Droid Depot proprietor Mubo for restaurant owner Bakkar, who later complained about 8D-J8's constant talking. Mubo suggested Bakkar try deactivating and reactivating the droid.[4]

Sometime during 34 ABY,[5] 8D-JD offered a Ronto Wrap to Remex Io, stating it was the best in the quadrant. Remex instead took the Meiloorun Juice which he said looked safer.[6]

Prior to working on Batuu, 8D-J8 spent time on Tatooine with Jawas.[7]

Behind the scenes[]

Concept art of 8D-J8

8D-J8 was announced as a character that would be present in the Ronto Roasters restaurant in the theme park land Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, which opened on May 31, 2019.[3][8] Prior to the opening, a post on the official Disney Parks Blog erroneously referred to 8D-J8 as a "former settler droid" rather than a smelter droid.[9]

  5. Galaxy's Edge: Black Spire starts concurrent with the Battle of Takodana and the Hosnian Cataclysm, which are depicted in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, then jumps four months ahead to the Resistance establishing its presence on Batuu, and concludes with an epilogue set several weeks later, when the First Order occupies the planet and the Battle of Batuu begins. The themed land Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is set during the occupation and depicts the Battle of Batuu via the attraction Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary dates the battle to six months after the events of The Force Awakens, which are dated by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas to 34 ABY. Furthermore, The Star Wars Book dates the Battle of Batuu to 34 years after the end of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 0 ABY; this again places the Battle of Batuu in 34 ABY. Therefore everything within Galaxy's Edge and any related media depicting the Battle of Batuu, or set between The Force Awakens and the battle, must also occur in that year.
