The 975th Battalion was a battalion of the Galactic Empire that consisted of Imperial stormtroopers.[2] Also known as the 975th stormtrooper garrison, it was attached to the Tarkin Initiative and were tasked with guarding the Imperial kyber refinery on Eadu.[1] The garrison often guarded top-secret research projects.[1]

History[]

The 975th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Imperial Army that was attached to the Tarkin Initiative that was responsible for the construction of the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station.[1] Around 1 BBY[5], the battalion was stationed on the planet Eadu in the Outer Rim Territories and guarded the Energy Conversion Lab. Shortly after the destruction of the holy city of Jedha, Director Orson Callan Krennic traveled to the station where he sought to inspect the research team lead by Galen Walton Erso to root out a traitor upon the discover than a pilot had defected and possibly compromised the Death Star and its secrecy. Krennic would arrive on the planet where Galen and his research team were gathered outside, stormtroopers flanking them.[4]

Watching the scientists in the pouring rain at night, the 975th Battalion stood guard as Krennic revealed that one of them was a mole who was collaborating with the Rebel Alliance and leaked details of the Death Star and demanded that the collaborator turn themself in or the whole team would suffer. After no one stood forward, Krennic declared it a group effort and prepared to have the whole team executed by his death troopers when Galen stood forward and revealed he was the mole. While Krennic was berating Galen for his treason, his daughter Jyn Erso had snuck onto the landing pad and knocked a stormtrooper off to avoid being detected. Before she could act, Rebel starfighters from Blue Squadron arrived and attacked the facility as part of Operation Fracture[6] with the first wave consisting of T-65B X-wing starfighters killing several stormtroopers in the process with their opening shots.[4]

The stormtroopers remained on guard as the facility was attacked and TIE fighters were deployed to deal with the Rebel X-Wings. Jyn then revealed herself to her father, getting Krennic's attention in the process as well, however he wasn't able to fire a shot at her as a Y-Wing bomber attacked the landing pad where it killed several more stormtroopers and morally wounded Galen Erso while Krennic avoided any serious injuries and retreated to his Delta-class T-3c shuttle. As Galen died in his daughter's arms, more stormtroopers of the battalion had emerged and spotted her, but were gunned down by Cassian Jeron Andor who got her up and began to escape the landing pad with her when more stormtroopers from the battalion showed up only to be gunned down by Baze Malbus who provided cover fire for the two of them to escape. Both Cassian and Jyn made it down the ladder to the surface while being pursued by even more stormtroopers of the battalion, but were saved thanks to covering fire from SW-0608, a stolen Zeta-class Heavy Cargo Shuttle, that eliminated the stormtroopers pursuing the two of them and escorted them and the rest of the rebel team back to the Great Temple at Yavin 4.[4]
