"A Fair Trade" is a short story that was written by Paul S. Kemp and published in the magazine Star Wars Insider 129.
Plot summary[]
Khedryn Faal and his partner, the Force-sensitive Cerean math savant Marr Idi-Shael, head to the Unknown Regions in search of a subspace salvaging beacon on a derelict.
As they approach the derelict the proximity alarms of their ship Seeker go off and another ship appears out of hyperspace and opens fire, crippling their engines. Reegas Vance, a rival of Faal's, arrives in his modified YT-2400 light freighter, the Blackstar.
Vance comms Faal to tell him that he is taking the derelict and that he's got 10 minutes until he boards with his crew and that if he wants to live, he's best off escaping via a pod.
Faal tells Marr to scrap the Seeker engines and they both get into a hardsuit and release the escape pod. Despite knowing it is empty, Vance fires on it just in case. As they board the Seeker and search it they notice it's empty and the hardsuits are gone.
As Vance and crew are boarding Seeker, Faal and Marr make their way to the Blackstar in their hardsuits, board it, kill the remaining members of Vance's crew and comm back to Seeker, telling Vance the engine situation and adding that there's caf for a few days and if they get cold, they should cuddle.
Faal ends by telling Vance that he might send someone back from Fhost to pick him up but that if he ever comes after him again he'll kill him.
As they jump to hyperspace Faal decides to rename The Blackstar to Junker.
