Plot summary[]
The tragedy[]
Smoke drifts out from several factory stacks on an industrial landscape. A hooded human boy passes an object to a Gotal, who passes it to a human man. The man brings the device to a table. Several gang members including an older Colby pick up blasters from the table. Colby insists on accompanying the Duros man Lazlo for the operation in his old neighborhood but Lazlo orders him to mind the store. When a green female Duros named Arin appears beside Colby, Lazlo tells her to keep an eye on him. She promises to look after him as Lazlo departs on a starship with his fellow gang members.
Later, Colby and Arin play a game of cards. The woman sights Lazlo's starship approaching. The stricken starship crashlands, with several gang members diving out of harm's way. Colby doesn't move as the ship comes to a stop in front of him. The two Duros board the damaged starship and find a wounded Bith gang member. The Bith tells them that Lazlo was killed by "lawmen". Lazlo's hat rolls over and Colby picks up his mentor's hat. Growling, he asks who killed Lazlo.
A bittersweet reunion[]
Later Colby's starship exits hyperspace and approaches a desert planet. At the spaceport, Arin asks Colby what is his plan. Colby says that he plans to go to the crime scene. Lazlo's hat rests on the cockpit console. Colby and Arin walked through the filthy and crime-ridden streets of Colby's old neighborhood. Colby looks into the window of the now empty candy store that he and Niro used to visit as children. He soon encounters a grown-up Niro, who is dressed in a blue and copper uniform.
The two embrace and Colby introduces Niro to his female friend Arin. Colby explains that Niro is his oldest and dearest friend. Niro addresses Colby by his nickname "Cad," remarking that a lot has changed but not for the better. Colby says that he has come back to address business and warns Niro to stay away because it could get "messy." Niro responds that he is now a deputy marshal and that it "better not get messy" because he doesn't want any harm to come to him.
When Colby asks if Niro was the lawman who killed his friend Lazlo, Niro responds that was the marshal. Colby vows to make the marshal pay for killing his friend. Niro reassures Colby that the authorities are making progress in improving living conditions and combating crime in their neighborhood. Unless he wants to help, Niro suggests that Colby leaves. Arin convinces him to leave. Before leaving, she shares a look with Niro.
The path of revenge[]
Later that night, Arin speaks with Cad aboard their starship. She touches her belly. Arin suggests that she let go of his desire to avenge Lazlo's death. Cad is sullen and suggests that she leave. Arin tries to reason with him, warning that if the lawman can take out Lazlo, he could die. Desiring revenge, Cad exits the starship. Arin follows and warns that there is a lot more at stake. Cad ignores her and dons Lazlo's hat. Arin watches with concern.
Outside a police station, a two droids stand by as a droid leads a human man into the building. Niro walks past a crowd people including a woman talking to a police officer. He touches a panel on the wall and places his blaster inside a compartment. An older human policeman with dark skin and curly hair approaches him. The Marshal asks if Niro managed to get through to Colby. Niro says he does not know because Colby has always been stubborn. The Marshal warns that if Colby doesn't listen, things could escalate. The Marshal rests his hand on Niro's shoulder and tells him to be ready. He pats him on the back as Niro sits in contemplation.
Elsewhere, Cad visits the candy store that he went with Niro as a child. He shatters the window and tosses a grenade inside. This creates an explosion which draws the attention of several police droids. Niro rushes to retrieve his blaster from the locker but the Marshal advises him to sit this one out. The Marshal grabs a blaster. When Niro suggests that he doesn't have to kill Cad, the Marshal says that it is not up to him. At the ship, Arin spots fire and smoke in the distance.
A police speeder arrives at the burning shopfront, where a crowd has gathered. The Marshal tells everybody to stay down and eyes two disintegrated police droids lying on the ground. Examining the fallen droids, he notices blaster shots. The Marshal hears Cad speaking from a girder behind. Cad asks if he was the lawman. As the two man face each other, Cad identifies himself as Cad Bane. The two man reach for their blasters.
Meanwhile, Niro waits anxiously at his desk. A police droid tells him that two police officers are down and that the fire is spreading. Niro looks up at the flashing screen and exits the station. The Marshal demands that Bane surrender. The two lock eyes as they reach for their holsters. Niro stumbles upon the standoff and pleads with Colby not to shoot. However, this distracts the Marshal and allows Bane to fire his blaster. The officer also grabs his blaster and fires. Cad dodges his blaster bolt but the Marshal is not so lucky and falls to the ground.
The death of a friendship[]
The Duros woman appears and Bane tells Arin to flee with him. However, she refuses and pleads with him to let this go. Arin has been hit in the shoulder by the shot fired by the Marshal. He holds her and covers her wound. As sirens approach, Niro kneels down and grabs the Marshal's blaster. He stands as several cruisers arrive. Niro tells his former friend Bane to surrender and asks if he is going to go quietly. Bane speaks to Arin and says that he will make sure he finishes it.
Arin pleads for Niro not to shoot. Niro responds that it is up to Bane. Arin tosses Bane's blaster toward Niro. Bane realizes that his blaster is gone and denounces Arin as a traitor. Arin responds that he gave her no choice and says that they would have died had she not acted. Several security restrain and arrest Bane, who is lead a way in handcuffs. As Bane is led away, Niro says that he got his revenge and asks if it was worth it. Bane cryptically responds that "it will be."
