"The first time I ever saw Grievous was in the Genndy Tartakovsky-produced animated shorts, where he felt like a horror movie monster hunting Jedi instead of teenagers. While sticking with the more recent characterization of him, I still wanted to play with the merciless hunter we were introduced to."
―Jody Houser[3]

Age of Republic - General Grievous 1 is ninth and final one-shot in the canon comic book anthology series Star Wars: Age of Republic. The issue was written by Jody Houser, illustrated by Luke Ross, and published on March 13, 2019 by Marvel Comics.

Plot summary[]

On the planet Ledeve, a female Mikkian Jedi activates her lightsaber in defense against General Grievous in an attempt to hold him off to buy time for her padawan to escape. Grievous, wielding four lightsabers, states that her attempt won’t save him, and she tries to hold her own but is struck down and killed by the cyborg. Her padawan, a human male, flees in horror towards their Jedi shuttle, but is too slow as Grievous beats him there. Using his speed and size, Grievous doesn’t give the padawan a chance and cuts him down before he can react. Collecting his lightsaber and datapad, Grievous sees that the Jedi were on Ledeve because of a nearby Jedi Temple, and so he ventures off through the thick jungle and scales the Temple using the claws on all four of his limbs.

Walking through a hallway of ancient Jedi statues, Grievous notes that the Jedi built them to represent their supposed glory, but he too has statues at his lair on Vassek 3, and they are ones that he’s earned unlike the Jedi, so he destroys all the statues out of hate for the Jedi. Deeper inside the Temple, Grievous encounters many traps to prevent him from exploring deeper, such as a lava pit or spike pits, but he uses his cybernetic enhancements like a grappling hook to avoid the danger. Grievous eventually reaches a tall room with a waterfall and sees a light inside the water. Knowing he’s reached what he came for, he reaches inside and tries to grab at the light but feels nothing and comes up empty handed. Believing that it’s a sensor error and Jedi trickery, he tries again and soon resorts to leaping inside with his full body, and only once his physical body parts touch the water does something happen.

Grievous finds himself inside of a black void with many different colored lights all around him, and a mysterious voice asks him if he’s come to seek knowledge, truth, or power. Grievous responds that he needs nothing from the Jedi except for their destruction, and the voice identifies that he’s steeped in destruction and has brought it upon himself. Just then, Grievous’ appearance changes to that of Qymaen jai Sheelal, the Kaleesh man that he was before his transformation, and he believes that he has improved from this body of flesh and found power that makes the Jedi tremble. As Grievous’ limbs start to fall off of his body, the voice tells him that he seeks to destroy power that he doesn’t comprehend and has carved away his own connection to it. He’s replaced it with parts whose strength he believes to understand, but his understanding is not strength. It is small, and so is he, and that’s all that he will ever be. Grievous is removed from this void and finds himself back outside the waterfall, and in response to being called small, he activates all four of his lightsabers and attacks the waterfall, but this has no result.

Leaving the Temple in frustration, Grievous contacts the battle droid commander aboard a Separatist dreadnought in orbit, and has them fire lock onto the coordinates he’s given them and open fire. The dreadnought reigns fire upon the Jedi Temple and completely destroys it, and so a satisfied Grievous stands atop a cliff and watches the fire burn for hours. As he leaves, he says that for all of their talk of power, they burn just as easily. However, once the destruction and fire comes to an end, the light from the power inside the Temple is still in place and shines bright in the night.

Continuity[]

Although the exact timeline placement of Age of Republic - General Grievous 1 has not been defined, writer Jody Houser imagined the story to be set sometime after the Clone Wars episode "Lair of Grievous."[3]
