Plot summary[]

Years ago on Coruscant in the Jedi Temple as a youngling, Obi-Wan Kenobi meditates amongst others and is told by their teacher that meditation is about more than just forging a deeper connection in the Force, as it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of themselves. It is a means of obtaining greater control over their thoughts and emotions, and must master themselves before they can hope to master the Force.

In the present, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi meditates with his padawan Anakin Skywalker, and he tells himself that while Anakin is excelling at his training, he never would’ve expected to take on a padawan of his own so soon. As visions of training with his master Qui-Gon Jinn and his death go through his mind, he believed that he would’ve had his master for guidance once he did get a padawan. Just then, Master Tosan enters the room and informs Kenobi that the Jedi Council has another mission for him. Reading off a datapad, Obi-Wan learns that an archaeology team has discovered a Jedi Holocron on the Mid-Rim planet Dallenor, and while it’s not a Republic world, the archeology team comprises Republic citizens. When Obi-Wan prepares to leave for the mission, he tells Anakin that he won’t be gone long and instructs him to continue his training with Yoda. However, Anakin tries to argue that he’s already so far ahead of the other children, but is told that while this may be true, it’s not up to the student to determine the training. Even though he says and stands by this, Obi-Wan feels that he’s disappointing Anakin as his master.

Later in the Jedi Temple Library, Obi-Wan is researching the archives for information on Dallenor when Yoda comes along. When Obi-Wan explains that he’s found mention of the planet, but there are no records of any Jedi who’ve been there, Yoda says that their names have been lost to time, so acquiring the Holocron will allow them to gain names and knowledge. As Obi-Wan prepares to leave, Yoda questions if he’ll take Skywalker with him, to which Obi-Wan replies that he hadn’t been planning on it as he isn’t sure that he’s ready. Yoda tells him that Anakin remains behind the other padawans because Obi-Wan is unsure, and while Anakin came to the temple much later and still has much to learn, a poorly trained Jedi can be a danger to them self and others, so if Kenobi is to train him then he must be trained well.

Afterwards, Obi-Wan and Anakin depart the Jedi Temple on a Jedi shuttle, and when Anakin asks if he can do some of the flying, he is told perhaps closer to their destination. Thinking to himself, Obi-Wan says that he can’t treat Anakin like a normal padawan because his path isn’t the same as his and he isn’t the same teacher as Qui-Gon. Along their travels, Anakin asks Obi-Wan what his life was like before the Jedi, and is told by his master that not much can be remembered as he left his homeworld when he was very young because he was identified as Force-sensitive. Anakin believes that because of this, Obi-Wan’s path was always destined to lead him to become a Jedi, unlike his where he was a slave. When Anakin brings up that this is the possibility that the council said he was too old to train, Obi-Wan tells him that Qui-Gon chose him to become his student, just like he’d once chosen Obi-Wan. However, Anakin quickly becomes frustrated after hearing this because Qui-Gon died, leaving Obi-Wan stuck with him, and so he storms off to the back of the ship before Obi-Wan can explain himself.

Later, the Jedi shuttle arrives on Dallenor, and the two Jedi are greeted by Clatriffe, a Togruta in charge of the excavation. As she brings them along to the dig site, she mentions how things will be better once the Holocron is gone, as they’ve had issues with local pirates who hired muscle once they learned of its value. While Anakin keeps watch outside, Obi-Wan heads inside a building with Clatriffe who retrieves the Holocron out of a box in a storage room with their other artifacts. Just as Obi-Wan thanks her due to the Jedi Council being very intrigued in the Holocron, Anakin rushes into the room and warns them of approaching pirates. Heading outside, Obi-Wan introduces himself to the group of pirates, and he is greeted by Hudso Shaku, the Fosh leader of the Krypder Riders who is willing to retrieve the Holocron from their dead bodies. As Obi-Wan activates his lightsaber, he states that while their intentions on Dallenor are peaceful, he isn’t afraid to defend himself. With his new target on Obi-Wan’s lightsaber, Hudso orders his men to attack and kill the Jedi. Using a variety of Jedi skills with his lightsaber and the Force, Obi-Wan holds off as many of the Krypder Riders as he can, but Hudso slips his guard and holds Anakin hostage with a knife to his neck. When Hudso tries to propose a deal - Obi-Wan’s lightsaber for his padawan, Anakin uses the Force on the unsuspecting Hudso and knocks him unconscious with rocks. The remaining pirates flee the site, and so the two Jedi board their shuttle with the newly acquired Holocron. Obi-Wan believes that Anakin handled himself admirably, and tells his apprentice that while he’s been ready, it was himself who wasn’t. Bringing up the subject from earlier, Obi-Wan suggests that perhaps it was him who felt like Anakin was stuck with him as a teacher. Remembering Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan believes that if he couldn’t save such a great Jedi in his master, then he couldn’t save a padawan, but Anakin states that the two of them will save each other as Qui-Gon would’ve wanted that. On their journey back, Obi-Wan allows Anakin to pilot the shuttle, and he reflects on how Yoda said that they never stop learning. Maybe the master is meant to be as much a student as the padawan, and while he may not be the teacher that Qui-Gon was, he is the one that Anakin has and he promises never to fail him again.

Continuity[]

  • Age of Republic - Obi-Wan Kenobi 1 takes place early in Anakin Skywalker's apprenticeship to Obi-Wan Kenobi and begins with Kenobi unsure if he should take Skywalker on missions. Skywalker himself ponders if he is not ready for missions, but both agreed they will continue to work together at the story's end. Dialogue in the comic further suggests the mission to indeed be Skywalker's first field mission, with the "Anakin Skywalker" encyclopedia affirming it was.[4] As such, it would logically fall before the Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin comic series, as that featured Skywalker and Kenobi performing a mission to Carnelion IV.[5] However, Star Wars: Timelines places Age of Republic - Obi-Wan Kenobi 1 in approximately 28 BBY, placing Obi-Wan and Anakin before it due to that series being dated to 29 BBY.[6] This article assumes Timelines is incorrect.

  2. Star Wars: Timelines dates Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin to 32 BBY and 29 BBY, respectively. As Age of Republic - Obi-Wan Kenobi is set between the events of both, it must have taken place between those years.
  3. Star Wars: Timelines establishes that Obi-Wan Kenobi was born in 57 BBY. As the script presented Cory Smith (@csmitharts) on Twitter (post on January 11, 2019) (backup link) establishes that Kenobi was around fifteen years old during the flashback's events, it must have occurred around 42 BBY.
