- "This weapon is your life."
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi
Anakin Skywalker's first lightsaber was the first lightsaber owned and built by Anakin Skywalker. It had a blue plasma blade, chunky controls, and thick ridges on the handle.[5] While Skywalker was fighting his way through Poggle the Lesser's battle droid foundries on Geonosis, his lightsaber was destroyed by a mechanical cutting arm. Shortly thereafter, the First Battle of Geonosis occurred, effectively starting the Clone Wars.[1] Sometime prior to the Battle of Christophsis, Skywalker built himself a new lightsaber.[6]
History[]
Construction[]
Around 29 BBY Padawan Anakin Skywalker traveled to Ilum where he found his kyber crystal, which he used to then construct his first lightsaber.[2]
Usage[]
Training sessions[]
- "He may be good with a lightsaber, but that doesn't mean he'll make a good Jedi."
- ―A Duros Jedi

Following the construction of his lightsaber, Skywalker would return to Coruscant where he would participate in saber training sessions. In one particular session, Skywalker would alter the appearance of a Jedi training droid to mimic the appearance of Darth Maul and his double-bladed lightsaber. Utilizing all his skills, Skywalker would emerge victorious by bisecting the droid in half with his lightsaber.[7]
Mission to Carnelian IV[]
Skywalker had his lightsaber when he and his master were investigating a distress signal.
Inquiring about lightsabers[]
Some time after his and his masters mission to Carnelian IV, Skywalker and Kenobi were about to spar in the Jedi Temple training grounds when Anakin asked his master why the Jedi use lightsabers as opposed to any other weapon powered by kyber crystals. Upon hearing this question, Kenobi told him the same thing Qui-Gon Jinn had told Kenobi; that wielding a lightsaber shows intent and that the user put thought behind wielding the weapon before drawing it, enforcing the idea that Jedi are protectors as opposed to destroyers.
Rescuing Yoda[]
When Grand Master Yoda was captured from Glee Anselm, Kenobi and Skywalker launched a rescue mission unbeknownst to them that it was actually a test for the two Jedi.[8]
A memorable training session[]
During Skywalker's training with Kenobi, the two engaged in a lightsaber skirmish in the Jedi Temple.[9]
Separatist crisis & destruction[]
- "Not again! Obi-Wan's gonna kill me."
- ―Skywalker, upon his lightsaber's destruction

Anakin with his lightsaber ignited.
While chasing bounty hunter Zam Wesell, the attempted assassin of Padmé Amidala through the skylanes of Coruscant, Skywalker grabbed onto Wesell's airspeeder. He ignited his lightsaber into the cockpit of the speeder in an attempt to sabotage the controls before the weapon flew out of his hand. Fortunately, the weapon was caught by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was closely following in the speeder Skywalker originally utilized for the chase. Once Skywalker caused Wesell to crash land outside the Outlander Club, Kenobi returned the lightsaber to him, whilst imploring him to take better care of it, saying the weapon was his "life".[1]
After Skywalker's mother was captured by Tusken Raiders, he tracked her to the Tuskens' camp. As soon as he found Shmi, she died in his arms, which caused the Padawan to go on a murderous rampage. Wielding his lightsaber, he slaughtered the entire tribe, including the men, women and children.[1]
After Obi-Wan Kenobi was captured by Count Dooku on Geonosis, Skywalker and Padmé Amidala launched a rescue attempt and infiltrated one of the Geonosian droid foundries. While fighting his way through the facility, Skywalker was knocked down and pinned beneath the machinery. He was able to free himself, but not before his lightsaber was cut in half by a descending mechanical blade. Skywalker was unaware the weapon has been destroyed until he attempted to activate it, remarking that Kenobi was going to kill him for not taking better care of the weapon.[1]
Legacy[]
At some point between his ordeal on Geonosis[1] and the mission to Benglor,[10] Anakin Skywalker built himself a new lightsaber.[4] He would wield this lightsaber throughout the Clone Wars until his Duel on Mustafar. Despite the loss of his lightsaber, Skywalker, now the Sith Lord Darth Vader, built his third and final lightsaber that was based off of his first one.
Upon being asked by Verla asked who Skywalker was, Ferren Barr ordered his droid Endee to display files 430 to 459. The droid displayed a hologram of several Aurebesh characters including Skywalker, as well as a video of Anakin fighting B1-series battle droids with his first lightsaber.[11]
While reflecting on memories of the First Battle of Geonosis at the Petranaki Arena decades later, Vader imagined himself fighting in the arena with his first lightsaber to defend Padmé from battle droids.[12]
After recruiting Sabé, Vader worked with her to fight through Governor Tauntaza's security. During one of their battles, Vader remembered using his first lightsaber to kill the Tusken Raiders.[13]
Behind the scenes[]
Anakin Skywalker's first lightsaber first appeared in the 2002 canon Star Wars film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.[1]
Sources are inconsistent regarding when Skywalker first built his lightsaber. He used his first lightsaber throughout the Marvel comic mini-series Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin, when he was twelve years old.[14] However, both Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know and its updated edition state that he built the lightsaber on Ilum at age fourteen.[15][16]
