"In the years leading up to the Battle of Yavin, Tatooine retained aspects of independence from the Empire, something the residents were apparently highly defensive of, but over time Imperial patrols in the space around the planet and in some of the major cities began to increase. […] Tatooine, and other worlds along the borderline of the Empire's territory, remained locked in this dual existence of being partially occupied and colonized without being formally conquered, for much of the Empire's existence."
Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[3]

At some point between 9 BBY and 4 ABY,[1] the Outer Rim Territories planet Tatooine was annexed by the Galactic Empire.[2] The Empire largely remained away from Tatooine[4] but maintained a military presence.[5] In the years before the Battle of Yavin, Imperial patrols in the space surrounding the planet and in a number of major cities began to increase. Along with other worlds on the edge of the Empire's territory, Tatooine was not formally conquered but instead partially colonized and occupied for a large duration of the reign of the Empire.[3] The Empire finally arrived in force[4] in pursuit of the rebel droids C-3PO and R2-D2[6] in 0 BBY.[7]

Behind the scenes[]

The annexation of Tatooine was mentioned in the 2021 reference book Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy.[2]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy establishes that Tatooine was annexed by the Galactic Empire prior to the Battle of Endor. As Star Wars: Timelines dates the founding of the Galactic Empire and the Battle of Endor to 19 BBY and 4 ABY respectively, the annexation must have occurred between those two years. In "Part I," the events of which are dated to 9 BBY by Timelines, an Anchorhead resident mentions that the planet is not under the Empire, meaning the annexation must have taken place afterward.
