"What other runs have you been on?"
"Zeitooine. And Dinwa Prime, and Arieli. More recently Ivera X."
―Wedge Antilles and Thane Kyrell[2]

Arieli was a planet under the Galactic Empire's rule. After a local insurgency sabotaged the Imperial Arquitens-class light cruiser Peacemaker there, the cruiser began firing on the world's municipal buildings. The light freighter Mighty Oak Apocalypse did a supply run to the planet during the Galactic Civil War.

Description[]

Arieli was a terrestrial planet.[1]

History[]

"On Arieli, the refueling equipment for an Arquitens-class light cruiser was sabotaged by a local insurgency group, meaning the vessel could not leave the planet’s atmosphere. While awaiting new equipment, the captain ordered his gunners to begin targeting municipal buildings such as schools, libraries, and hospitals."
―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[1]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Arieli was under Imperial rule. A local insurgency operated on the world and sabotaged the refueling equipment aboard the Imperial Arquitens-class light cruiser Peacemaker, making it unable to leave the atmosphere. While the cruiser waited for new equipment, the captain ordered his gunners to start targeting municipal buildings like libraries, medcenters, and schools. The Imperial reinforcements that subsequently arrived joined in on this.[1]

Between 0 ABY and 1 ABY,[3] during the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, the light freighter Mighty Oak Apocalypse, or Moa, made a relief supply run to Arieli. The Moa's copilot and navigator, ex-TIE pilot Thane Kyrell, took part in the delivery. The Moa later brought medical supplies to the planet Oulanne[2] in 1 ABY,[3] where Kyrell met the Alliance pilot Wedge Antilles. When asked by Antilles about where else he had done relief runs, Kyrell recalled the missions to Arieli and a few other victims of the Empire's war crimes like Dinwa Prime, Ivera X, and Zeitooine. Antilles, having visited some of those locations himself, went on to recruit Kyrell into the Alliance.[2]

The events at Arieli were logged in an After Action Report for the Peacemaker, which found itself in the "Imperial Navy" section of the Imperial Archives. After reading the file, the historian Beaumont Kin summarized the events at Arieli in[1] his[4] 35 ABY[5] book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire. In the book, he remarked that when an enemy eluded them, the Empire would mercilessly target ones they could reach instead.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Arieli was first mentioned in the 2015 novel Lost Stars, written by Claudia Gray.[2]

  5. Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire states that thirty years have passed since the end of the Galactic Civil War and months have passed since the Battle of Exegol. As Star Wars: Timelines dates the end of the war to 5 ABY and the Battle of Exegol to 35 ABY, the in-universe The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire must have been published in 35 ABY.
