Arleil Schous was an aging Defel male. Like all Defels, he had the ability to bend light around himself, becoming especially hard to see at dusk, though his ability to do this had diminished with age.
Schous was present at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina the fateful day that Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi entered the bar. He sat with Bom Vimdin, Pons Limbic, Hem Dazon, and Braconnor Bakiska.[1]
He operated as a mercenary, and was one of the Rebel Alliance's contacts in Mos Eisley.
Behind the scenes[]
His famous scene when his eyes glow red in the dark was replaced by Melas, due to George Lucas' wish. However, Arleil may still be seen in the background behind Hem Dazon's introductory shot. "Arleil Schous" is an anagram of Charles Louis (Kallenbach), a Decipher employee. The character's mask was previously used for the obscure 1974 Halloween live show "In the Attic", with Rick Baker in the costume. In A New Hope, Schous is portrayed by Kim Falkinburg.[2]
