"I've ridden aryx. Big bipedal birds native to Cerea. Do those count?"
―Kidi Aleri, to Leia Organa[1]

Aryx were large bipedal birds native to[1] the Mid Rim planet[2] Cerea. The Cerean rebel Kidi Aleri rode the birds at some point in her life prior to Operation Yellow Moon[1] in 4 ABY.[3]

While participating in the operation—an Alliance mission designed to distract Imperial forces—Alliance General Leia Organa asked Aleri and the other members of the team taking part in the mission if they knew how to ride. In response, Aleri described the birds to Organa, stating that she was unsure if having ridden them would prepare her to ride the mounts that Organa planned to rent on the Corva sector planet Jaresh.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The aryx was first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the 2015 novel Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure, written by Jason Fry and Cecil Castellucci.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the aryx first appeared in the first issue of the Star Wars: Republic comic-book series, written by Jan Strnad, pencilled by Anthony Winn, and published by Dark Horse Comics[4] on December 16, 1998.[5]
