IG-88, a famous assassin droid

Assassin droids,[2] also known as war droids,[3] were a type of droid built specifically for the purpose of assassination. They were independently programmed, answering to no masters,[2] but could be programmed to serve one or more masters.[4] Assassin droids like the IG-RM bodyguard and enforcer droids and the HK-87 assassin droids also served as bodyguards and enforces for their masters.[5][6]

The company Holowan Laboratories produced a model of assassin droid known as the IG-86 sentinel droid, which were used as enforcers by criminal elements.[10] Other assassin droids included the BT-1 assassin droids and 0-0-0 produced by the Galactic Empire's Tarkin Initiative,[4] and the droid bounty hunters IG-88,[11] IG-90,[12] and IG-11.[13] The Imperial Security Bureau and Imperial Army Intelligence utilized the E522 assassin droid for use of black op missions. The Rebel Alliance's Intelligence also later used it.[14]
