"I fully believe that this attack is the last demonstration we'll need to launch against the Paataatus. Their diplomats seem fully committed to withdrawing to their borders and leaving the Ascendancy strictly alone."
―Admiral Ar'alani to a tribunal of Syndics[src]

The attack on the Paataatus was a retaliatory strike conducted by the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet on Nettehi, the homeworld of the Paataatus species, shortly after an attack on the Chiss homeworld of Csilla in 19 BBY. At the time, the Syndicure of the Chiss Ascendancy did not have definitive proof that the Paataatus government was behind the attack on Csilla, but justified the attack as a means to punish the Paataatus for proven encroachments into Ascendancy territory.

The Paataatus' defense forces were far more prepared to defend their homeworld than most of the officers of the Chiss Picket Force Six anticipated. Only Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo expected their level of preparation, and thus disobeyed the orders of Admiral Ar'alani to break off, feign weakness, and draw most Paataatus forces from the bulk of the Chiss picket force. In doing so, Thrawn bought the other Chiss warships time to regroup and pick off most of the Paataatus fighters; thus securing a Chiss victory.

Prelude

"No one sends warships against the Ascendancy on a lark and then goes home. Someone out there is plotting against us. That someone needs to be found and taught a serious lesson."
―A Speaker for the Obbic family after Csilla was attacked[src]

The Chiss Ascendancy capital planet of Csilla was attacked by unknown forces for the first time in decades[1] at some point in 19 BBY.[2] It was later discovered that the attackers were Paataatus, and attacked at the behest of the Nikardun Destiny, which had conquered the Paataatus Hiveborn and subjugated that species as part of the Nikardun conquests. The Nikardun, led by General Yiv the Benevolent, had massacred a group of Paccosh refugees in the Ascendancy's Dioya system, and ordered the attack on Csilla to distract the Chiss from the attack at Dioya.[1]

The attack on Csilla left the Ascendancy's ruling Syndicure in a state of furor and uproar. The ruling Syndics demanded the Chiss Defense Force ascertain their attackers' identities promptly and retaliate. One Syndic proposed the Paataatus were to blame for the attack, and as such the Expansionary Defense Fleet should retaliate.[1]

Supreme General Ba'kif thought the question of why Csilla had been attacked was more interesting than who had attacked it, but kept such thoughts mainly to himself and Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn". Neither Ba'kif nor Thrawn were convinced of the Paataatus' responsibility for the attack on Csilla, but Ba'kif agreed that the Paataatus had to be punished for the other raids they had conducted within Chiss territory lest others in the Chaos believed they could attack the Chiss with impunity.[1]

The attack

"So we play the wounded animal and draw the enemy to us, giving the rest of the force time to regroup and counterattack."
"Yes. The Paataatus have a swarm mentality. That thought pattern predisposes them to concentrate their attention on wounded opponents."
―Mid Captain Samakro and Senior Captain Thrawn[src]

Five Chiss heavy cruisers (pictured) participated in the attack on the Paataatus.

Following the attack on Csilla, Admiral Ar'alani launched an attack on the Paataatus' homeworld[1] Nettehi.[3] Ar'alani's Picket Force Six, led by her Nightdragon man-of-war Vigilant, performed the attack, joined by Thrawn's cruiser Springhawk and four other Chiss heavy cruisers.[1]

To the confusion of Ar'alani and many other Chiss, the Paataatus military seemed uncannily prepared for an attack by the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. Picket Force Six was met with stiff resistance, including at least fifty Paataatus fighters.[1]

It was later discovered that the Paataatus had been informed of the Ascendancy's optimal attack vector by a Chiss diplomat, who had warned the Paataatus about the next time they see Chiss forces coming "from those stars." Among all the commanding officers of the Chiss warships at Nettehi, only Thrawn was prepared for the possibility. As such, Thrawn disobeyed an order from Ar'alani to win the battle and save the Picket Force from being overwhelmed by Paataatus forces. Picket Force Six successfully regrouped and destroyed most of the defending starfighters, causing the Paataatus to surrender.[1]

Aftermath

"We blasted the Paataatus into small bits of metal and got as groveling a peace settlement from them as I've ever seen. And the Aristocra still aren't happy?"
"No. But we're not the ones they're unhappy at. We just happen to be the most convenient targets right now for their annoyance."
―Senior Captain Wutroow and Admiral Ar'alani as they approach an Aristocra tribunal following the attack[src]

Admiral Ar'alani (pictured) was called to testify at a tribunal on Csilla following Thrawn's disobedience of an order during the attack.

Six days after the attack, the Aristocra called a tribunal to inquire about Thrawn's disobedience of an order from Admiral Ar'alani. Thrawn's disobedience ultimately won the day for the Ascendancy, and the Admiral believed that if it had not, the Aristocra would have pressed charges against him for insubordination. Even so, and despite Thrawn's vindication by the Defense Hierarchy Council, Thrawn's political enemies among the Aristocra saw the incident as a chance to attack him.[1]

Thrawn was absent from the tribunal as he was sent on a secret mission for Ba'kif. Ar'alani and her second-in-command, Senior Captain Kiwu'tro'owmis "Wutroow," were questioned by a group of Syndics on Csilla as to why Thrawn was apparently allowed to disobey an order. Wutroow responded that Thrawn had done what was necessary and proper, as a foolish Chiss diplomat had once pointed in the direction of Csilla from the Paataatus homeworld and warned the Paataatus of the vector by which the Chiss would launch an attack if provoked. Wutroow told the tribunal that only Thrawn had realized that the Paataatus anticipated the Chiss angle of attack and saved the day by adapting.[1]

The next year,[4] Thrawn's forces would return to the space above Nettehi, but as liberators. The Chiss and the Paataatus were thus no longer adversaries, but allies. According to Syndic Prime Mitth'urf'ianico, the Diplomatic corps of the Chiss Ascendancy did not know whether to "salivate" or be furious over the "first breakthrough in relations with the Paataatus."[3]

Behind the scenes

The attack on the Paataatus first appeared in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising by Timothy Zahn, the first installment in Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy.[1]
