"Scuttle-butt is he took out the anti-orbital ion cannons of Spefik single-handed."
―An Imperial pilot on Ranulf Trommer[src]

The Battle of Spefik was fought during the Galactic Civil War between forces of the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The attacking Imperial forces ultimately proved successful, aided especially by the skill of elite starfighter pilot Lieutenant Ranulf Trommer.

The battle

"There were two wings, I just made the lucky shot."
Ranulf Trommer[src]

Spefik was located within the Atrivis sector of the Outer Rim Territories, and was a desolate and barren planet.[1] During the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance to Restore the Republic established a base there, defended by anti-orbital ion cannons. Around six months after the Battle of Yavin, the base was discovered by the Galactic Empire. They attacked with a force of two fighter wings, including one containing the elite pilot Lieutenant Ranulf Trommer. Trommer destroyed the Rebel anti-orbital ion cannons with a salvo from his starship.[2]

Following the battle, Trommer was transferred to the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Ravagor and fought in the Battle of Aguarl III. Word of his exploits at Spefik preceded him to his new post, where he was attributed with single-handedly winning the battle.[2]

Behind the scenes

The Battle of Spefik was first mentioned in the comic River of Chaos, written by Louise Simonson (1995). The battle helped establish the credentials of Ranulf Trommer as an elite pilot. The battle was later mentioned in the Star Wars Encyclopedia (1998), under the Spefik entry. This entry was repeated verbatim in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia (2008). Given the time frame of the battle, and its location in the Atrivis sector, it is likely the Rebel forces belonged to the Atrivis Sector Force, which co-ordinated Rebel activity in the sector.[3]
