"His cousin escaped and took him to Zehava. He had a few peaceful years, but then the Daan attacked the Melida sector, and his cousin had to fight. She was seventeen, old enough then. She died, too. Nield was left on the streets to fend for himself. He was eight years old."
―Cerasi, recounting Nield's childhood to Obi-Wan Kenobi[src]

Around 49 BBY,[3] a battle occurred in the city of Zehava on the planet Melida/Daan.[1] One of the many pointless conflicts[4] between the warring tribes of the Melida and Daan, it began when the Daan launched an assault against the Melida sector of the city. The cousin of the Daan child Nield was forced to fight, and she was killed in the battle, leaving eight-year-old Nield, whose parents had died in previous battles, on the streets by himself.[1] About five years later,[5] Nield's friend Cerasi would recount the struggles of his childhood, including this battle, to Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi.[1]

Behind the scenesEdit

This battle is briefly mentioned in the 1999 young readers book The Defenders of the Dead, the fifth entry in Jude Watson's Jedi Apprentice young readers series. The battle was later mentioned in the entry for Nield in the 2008 compendium The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia. Neither source indicates the outcome of the battle.

Page 65 of The Defenders of the Dead identifies this battle as occurring when Nield is eight, thus the battle can be dated to approximately 49 BBY.
