"Battlecruiser 17, Battlecruiser 19, attack position."
―A B1-series battle droid, calling Battlecruiser 17 to reinforce the blockade — (audio) Listen (file info)[src]

Battlecruiser 17 was the callsign of a Munificent-class star frigate of the Confederacy of Independent Systems' naval forces during the Clone Wars. In 21 BBY, Battlecruiser 17 served as part of the Confederacy's blockade of the planet Ryloth and was placed under the command of Neimoidian Captain Mar Tuuk. In expectancy of an attack from Galactic Republic forces, the frigate was positioned elsewhere in preparation for a trap organized by Tuuk. Following the arrival of a Republic fleet led by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, the Neimoidian ordered Battlecruiser 17 and three other Munificents, including Battlecruiser 19, into the Ryloth system, which forced the Republic to retreat.

Shortly after, a Republic starfighter squadron commanded by Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker's Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, made a second attack on the blockade. During the second attack, Battlecruiser 17 and the rest of the Separatist fleet were destroyed by Tano's squadron.

Description[]

Battlecruiser 17 was the callsign of a[1] 825-meter-long, 426-meter-wide, 243-meter-tall[2] Munificent-class star frigate[1] that was equipped with seven ion drive thrusters,[3] a hyperdrive generator,[1] and two long-range hyperwave transceiver masts.[6] Mounted at the vessel's prow were two heavy turbolaser cannons and two long-range heavy ion cannons,[4] and it was additionally armed with thirty-four light turbolaser cannons, seventeen on the port side and seventeen on the starboard side.[5] Both the port and starboard sides of the hull featured the emblem of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[1]

History[]

Defense of the blockade[]

"Now is the time to bring in our reinforcements."
―Mar Tuuk orders Battlecruiser 17 to the system — (audio) Listen (file info)[src]

Battlecruiser 17 enters the Ryloth system alongside the rest of the Separatist blockade.

In 22 BBY,[8] during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Confederacy's droid armies invaded the planet Ryloth and established a blockade in orbit around the world. The blockade was comprised of a Lucrehulk-class Battleship and six Munificent-class star frigates, including Battlecruiser 17, with the force commanded by Neimoidian Captain Mar Tuuk.[1]

Later, in 21 BBY,[7] the Confederacy's blockade was challenged by a Republic fleet of three Venator-class Star Destroyers commanded by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. During the battle, the Republic's Blue Squadron began an attack run on Tuuk's Lucrehulk-class Battleship. In response, the Neimoidian ordered Battlecruiser 17, Battlecruiser 19, and two other Munificents, which had been positioned elsewhere in preparation for a trap set by the blockade prior to the battle, to join him in the Ryloth system.[1]

As Battlecruiser 17 and the other Munificents entered the system and assumed attack position, the Republic was caught off guard, forcing them to withdraw. During the Republic retreat, the reinforced Separatist blockade was able to destroy the Star Destroyer Redeemer.[1]

Blockade's destruction[]

"What should we do?"
"Begin attack."
―An OOM command battle droid, ordering the frigates to fire on the Resolute[src]

All six Munificent-class star frigates fire upon the Resolute.

Following the Republic's retreat, Battlecruiser 17 and the three other frigates remained in the system alongside the blockade, rather than returning to their ambushing position. However, the Republic returned for a second assault on the blockade, resulting in the destruction of Tuuk's command ship by the Venator-class Star Destroyer Defender, which was sent hurtling into the Lucrehulk by Skywalker. The last of the Jedi's Venators, the Resolute, then arrived in the system and angled its ventral hull in the direction of the frigates as part of Skywalker's Padawan, Ahsoka Tano's,[1] Marg Sabl tactic.[9]

Tano then led a starfighter squadron into battle while the OOM command battle droids on the six remaining frigates, thrown into disarray with their command ship's destruction, inquired as to what their orders were. In response, one of the droids ordered all frigates to open fire on the Star Destroyer, but amid their attack on the Resolute, Tano and her squadron were able to destroy all six Munificents, including Battlecruiser 17.[1]

After the frigates were destroyed, a Republic invasion fleet arrived in the system led by Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu, ultimately leading to the liberation of Ryloth from the Confederacy's control.[10]

Commanders and crew[]

"I think the Captain left."
"Who's in charge?"
"Not me."
"Not me."
―OOM command battle droids of the Ryloth blockade — (audio) Listen (file info)[src]

Battlecruiser 17 was commanded by an OOM command battle droid during the attack on the Confederacy's blockade over Ryloth. Following the destruction of the Separatist command ship, the droid commander spoke with the OOM command battle droids of the other five Munificents, who agreed to commence attack on the Resolute.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Battlecruiser 17 first appeared in "Storm Over Ryloth,"[1] the nineteenth episode of the first season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, which aired on February 27, 2009.[11]
