- ―Beilert Valance, to his father

Sometime after Chorin's liberation, a young Valance asked his father, who was also a human miner, if he would remain a miner his whole life like his ancestors. The boy's father stated that he believed Valance himself was different and was born free, and that he belonged to the stars.
