Ben Kenobi's cave

Ben Kenobi's cave^[3], or Obi-Wan's first retreat^[1] was a cave located in the Dune Sea desert on the planet Tatooine that fugitive Jedi Master Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi resided in^[2] in 9 BBY.^[4]

History[]

10 years after the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, Obi-Wan took refuge in a cave where he could keep an eye on Anakin Skywalker's son, Luke Skywalker. Obi-Wan only had a few things with him and would go outside and look afar on a cliff to check on Luke. One day, Obi-Wan received a call from Senator Bail Prestor Organa that his adoptive daughter: Leia Organa got kidnapped by Bounty Hunters and asked for his help, but Obi-Wan refused. Later, when Obi-Wan returned, to the cave, he found Senator Organa and convinced him to save Leia, though Obi-Wan was reluctant, but later agreed.^[2] After returning Leia to her home, Obi-Wan later packed up and moved out of the cave to find a new home to settle in.

Behind the scenes[]

The cave first appeared in the first episode of the series Obi-Wan Kenobi.^[2] Kenobi's humble living quarters were drawn from the original script of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, where Ben is described as living in a cave. By the time production started on Episode IV, the location was transplanted into a hut, but there are still blueprint drawings referring to his home as a "cave." Placing Kenobi in a cave and not his hut at this time met several story needs. As established in DK Publishing's Star Wars: Complete Locations map, Kenobi's hut was quite far from the Lars homestead, and the series needed him closer to keep an eye on the farm.^[5]
