Benj Marko was a human Jedi Padawan during the High Republic Era who was apprenticed to Jedi Master Helion Volte. Marko and Volte were part of Galactic Republic Outer Rim Expedition Eight-Zero-Seven, an Outer Rim Exploration Team whose primary mission was establishing a communications network. In 382 BBY, Marko and the team crossed paths with Jedi Porter Engle and Barash Silvain at the Office of the Frontier, and Volte offered to drop them off on the planet Gansevor since their team was heading in that direction. On the way, Volte asked Engle to spar, explaining that they only got the opportunity to spar with Marko, who was improving but still had less skill because he was a Padawan, causing Marko to make an exclamation of frustration. Marko was mentioned and pictured in Chronicles of the Jedi, a document written by Jedi Master Harli Cogra in the weeks following the destruction of Starlight Beacon in 230 BBY.

He made his first appearance and was identified in the first issue of the 2022 comic mini series Star Wars: The High Republic — The Blade by Charles Soule. The character's last name was first revealed in the 2023 reference book Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi by Cole Horton.
