A civil war between factions of the crime syndicate known as Black Sun was engineered by the Falleen criminal Savan[6] in 4 ABY. Following the death of Prince Xizor, her uncle and head of Black Sun, the year prior, the syndicate was left without leadership and split by conflicts between rival lieutenants. In an attempt to unite the remnants of Black Sun under her control, Savan sought out the Human replica droid Guri for the secrets she carried as Xizor's former right hand,[2] employing the Hiitian bounty hunter Kar Yang in the guise of "Azool," a male antiques dealer, to locate the droid.[9]

At the same time, Savan had infiltrated Black Sun in a Human identity, and incited internal conflict to eliminate her rivals.[6] During a New Republic mission to the galactic capital planet Coruscant aiming to negotiate an end to the war and avoid civilian casualties, the Falleen staged an attack pinned on Black Sun Vigo Vekker, creating a target for rival factions while she maintained a false pursuit of peace.[5] However, New Republic leader Princess Leia Organa uncovered Savan's plot, and discovered that she had left for Hurd's Moon. Savan had tracked Guri to the moon,[6] where the Human replica droid had enlisted the advanced medical droid A-OIC and its master Massad Thrumble to disable her assassin programming.[5] Backed by hired forces, the Falleen breached Thrumble's secure surgical facility and attempted to command Guri with a control phrase. However, Thrumble's deprogramming had rendered the code inert, and Savan was incapacited by Guri and taken into New Republic custody,[7] preventing the rise of her new Black Sun.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Black Sun civil war first appeared in the third issue of the Dark Horse Comics series Shadows of the Empire: Evolution, written by Steve Perry, illustrated by Ron Randall,[5] and published on April 8th, 1998.[10]

Although the faction led by the Heroes of Yavin in this conflict was identified as the Rebel Alliance by Savan's entry of the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia,[11] Guri's entry in the same book referred to it as the New Republic,[8] the Alliance's successor.[2] The original comic also referred to the faction as the Alliance,[7] but The New Essential Chronology placed the story in the early New Republic era.[2]
