Blackbacks were majestic, forest-dwelling birds of prey that lived in the Hanna Wild Game Reserve and other locations on Chandrila. The birds were a popular hunting prize, though they were well-protected by the the Chandrilan government. Blackbacks' diet consisted of squalls and small rodents, which they sometimes hunted while circling thermal vents.

Biology and appearance[edit | edit source]

Blackbacks were birds of prey that lived on the Core World of Chandrila. Their wingspan was over five meters wide.[1]

Behavior[edit | edit source]

Blackbacks were carnivorous creatures that hunted squalls and small rodents. The birds often circled the thermal vents in Chandrila's Crystal Canyons, where they stalked prey and, on occasion, bothered climbers.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Prior to the construction of Chandrila's many farms, blackbacks roamed over much of the planet. However, because the birds were seen as valuable hunting trophies, they were nearly hunted to hundreds of years before the Galactic Civil War. As a result, Chandrila's squall population increased dramatically, which endangered crops. Eventually, the blackback was protected by the Chandrilan government, and allowed to roam large preserves such as the Hanna Wild Game Reserve.

During the Imperial Era, blackbacks in the Hanna Wild Game Reserve were hunted by ghorla-riding hunters, though to do so, one required a permit that cost up to 200,000 credits per kill, a sum that was used by the Chandrilans to fund breeding programs for the birds. During the Blockade on Chandrila, all permits were suspended except for those belonging to Imperials.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The blackback was first mentioned in the 2003 Star Wars Roleplaying Game sourcebook Coruscant and the Core Worlds, which was published by Wizards of the Coast.[2]
