"The dark side is always at hand, Padawan."
―Luminara Unduli to Barris Offee as the two stood under a blackneedle tree[1]

The blackneedle tree was a type of tree that grew in Oa Park on the Galactic Republic's capital planet of Coruscant.[1] The tree growing in the park was planted by 420 BBY.[2] Sometime before Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee fought with the mercenary Phow Ji on the planet Drongar[1] in 20 BBY,[2] she and her master, Luminara Unduli, stood in the shade of one such tree that was three meters in diameter, 200 meters tall, and over 400 years old.[1]

There, Unduli warned her Padawan that the dark side of the Force was always a threat, against which she should be vigilant. On the night after her fight with Ji, which had tempted Offee to use the dark side, she remembered her time with Unduli in the park, including the interaction in the blackneedle's shade.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The blackneedle tree was mentioned in the 2004 novel MedStar I: Battle Surgeons, which was written by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry as the first book in the MedStar Duology.[1]
