Blizzard 1 was a modified All Terrain Armored Transport walker which served as Major General Maximilian Veers' personal AT-AT, with increased firepower and additional armor.
Characteristics[]
The walker designated as Blizzard 1 was a modified All Terrain Armored Transport that had been specially designed to house heat circulation systems, de-icing controls, and energy efficient environmental controls. The walker was 20 meters long and 22.5 meters high. It could travel at a maximum speed of 60 km/h and was armed with 2 heavy laser cannons[10] and 2 medium blaster cannons.[10] A crew of 1 pilot and 1 gunner/co-pilot sat in the cockpit along with the vehicle's commander.[10] During the battle of Hoth it carried at least 40 snowtroopers deployable via as well as at least 4 snow scout troopers, two deck officers (upper and lower)[8] and 4 74-Z speeder bikes with modifications for the cold and snowy environment.[1]
History[]
Blizzard 1 was an All Terrain Armored Transport that was constructed at Camp Culroon a secret research base on the planet Zaloriis between 0 ABY and 3 ABY. It was used by Colonel Maximilian Veers at the Battle of Zaloriis during the Galactic Civil War. After the battle, Veers was promoted to General.[12] Veers later took control of Blizzard 1 again to lead the Imperial Blizzard Force in its assault upon Echo Base at the Battle of Hoth, targeting and successfully destroying the Rebel main power generator.[10] Immediately after destroying the shield generator, Blizzard 1 was disabled when the snowspeeder Rogue 4, piloted by Derek Klivian and Kesin Ommis, crashed into its cockpit.[11] Though Veers survived the crash, albeit with serious injuries to his legs that forced him to rely on a small power chair carriage for the rest of his life, the rest of Blizzard 1's crew perished.
Behind the scenes[]
In The Empire Strikes Back novelization, a dying Derek Klivian crashed into Blizzard 1, killing himself and Veers. This was contradicted by later sources showing both characters alive after Hoth. Later retcons incorporated this source by having the crash occur, with Hobbie surviving due to copious amounts of bacta therapy, and Veers receiving crippling injuries. Also, a flaw in the 2006 video game Star Wars: Empire at War, prevented Blizzard 1 from being toppled by snowspeeders, which has been fixed in a patch.
Veers was seen driving Blizzard 1 in the 2006 video game LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy and its 2007 compilation re-release.
Lego[]
In 2021 a LEGO version of Blizzard 1 was released as part of the Ultimate Collectors Series. The mini figure scale set depicts the walker during the events of the Battle of Hoth and includes 9 figures; General Veers, Two pilots, 4 snowtroopers, a snowtrooper commander and Luke Skywalker in his Hoth pilot outfit. As well as featuring two speeder bikes and an e-web repeating blaster cannon, the set has a very detailed interior with room for 40 Lego snowtroopers.
