The Blue Gown of the Sullen Moon was a primarily blue, floor-length gown with long, broad sleeves that had a yellow inner lining and a panel of yellow fabric layered under two smaller blue panels of fabric hanging from the front of the waist.[1]

The robe was worn together with the Lorrdian Cowl of Quiescence, which matched the gown's colors,[1] by the Lorrdian male known as the High Priest while he led a Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance pilgrimage to Jedha City on the sacred moon Jedha shortly before[2] the city's destruction by the Death Star superweapon in 1 BBY.[3] Members of the Brotherhood concealed their individuality as part of their faith, with others wearing orange robes,[1] meaning that the High Priest could be identified by the blue cowl and gown.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Blue Gown of the Sullen Moon appeared in the Anthology Series film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story[4] which was released on December 16, 2016.[5] Prior to the film's release, the gown was revealed as part of a reel of promotional footage for Rogue One shown at Celebration Europe on July 15, 2016.[6]

The gown's name was then provided in the accompanying reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, which was written by Pablo Hidalgo[1] and released on the same day as the film.[5] The name of the vestment is a reference to[7] the 1989 song "Nightgown of the Sullen Moon" by alternative rock band They Might Be Giants.[8]
