The Byne Guild was a guild[1] based in in the outer reaches of the galaxy during the High Republic Era. Owning a fleet of starships, the guild was headed by Scover Byne.[2] One of the Guild's ships, the Legacy Run, which was captained by the military veteran Hedda Casset, was destroyed in the crisis known as the Great Hyperspace Disaster.[1] The Guild was dissolved[5] not long before the dedication of the Starlight Beacon space station after Byne was reported to Galactic Republic authorities by her adoptive daughter, Affie Hollow, who had discovered that the Guild was guilty of abusing laws relating to the treatment of indentured workers.[2] The disbandment of the guild hurt many of its former employees and forced them to act out on their own, taking work from new bosses whom Captain Dumas Mar'Ti said made Byne look like a Jedi mystic in comparison. The worsening state of the galaxy amid the Nihil conflict made life without the backing of the guild even harder for former employees.[6]
After the destruction of Starlight Beacon, Hollow proposed forming a new version of the Byne Guild for the ongoing war against the Nihil marauders. In Hollow's proposed new form of the guild, each guild ship would work together as partners, who would protect each other, trade shipments as required, and share information with both their collective guild and the Republic. It was Hollow's hope that they would secure even at least one third of the former guild craft, all of which would be able to keep an eye on the Nihil and report information useful in defeating the marauders once and for all. While she knew not every member of the old guild would agree to her new organization, she still thought a unified force could do more than any of them would achieve alone. Hollow proposed her idea to Mar'Ti on the planet Kennerla in a bar, where Mar'Ti noted she would not want to ally with every single member of the old guild—at least not without some oversight—but was open to the idea.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
The Byne Guild was created for the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project, and first appeared in the novel The High Republic: Light of the Jedi.[1] All pre-released excerpts of Light of the Jedi named the organization the "Byrne" Guild, so the proper spelling was unknown until the novel's final release.[7]
