Carsunum was a spice variant that the smuggler Platt Okeefe recommended as a profitable cargo in the pirate Maz Kanata's Smuggler's Guide. Okeefe warned against trafficking variants such a ryll or the strains of spice mined on Kessel, and suggested that smugglers stick to variants like carsunum, andris and sansanna spice.

Carsunum was first mentioned in the 2018 canon reference book Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide, written by Daniel Wallace. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, carsunum was first introduced in the 1997 novel The Paradise Snare, written by A. C. Crispin.
