"However, under Imperial control—even as early as 18 BBY—Champala became the home of dual, competing, industries. The oceans were significantly overfished by the Imperial Champalan Marine Resource Collective while the landmasses were extensively drilled by the Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative."
―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[1]

The Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative was a mining company affiliated with the Galactic Empire that drilled the landmasses of the planet Champala extensively while competing with the Imperial Champalan Marine Resource Collective. Both companies poisoned the world and bribed Grand Vizier Mas Amedda to ignore the destruction they caused.

Description[]

The Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative was a mining company associated with the Galactic Empire.[1]

History[]

Chewing up Champala[]

"Together both companies poisoned the land and the sea of Champala while also squabbling over which had priority for the few spaceports, which became congested and polluted."

The initiative poisoned Champala, home of the Chagrians.

As early as 18 BBY during the Imperial Era, the Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative and the Imperial Champalan Marine Resource Collective became the two major competing industries on the planet Champala, a resort world[1] that was home to the Chagrian species.[2] The initiative extensively drilled the world's landmasses for fossilized resources, resulting in the land becoming poisoned as the collective's fishing also poisoned the seas.[1]

The two companies squabbled over which had priority in Champala's few spaceports, which became polluted and congested during the companies' activity. The collective and the initiative also paid ongoing bribes and a significant percentage of their trading profits to Mas Amedda, a native of Champala and former representative of the world in the Galactic Senate who had become Grand Vizier of the Empire. This persuaded Amedda to look the other way as his homeworld and people became victim to the corporate destruction caused by the competing industries. Levinous, a major shareholder in the Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative, had close ties to Amedda and was granted the Imperial rank of Grand General, one of the most prestigious ranks within the Imperial Army. As he never left the Imperial capital of Coruscant, he became known as a "holotable general."[1]

Extractor exposed[]

"Why exactly Mas Amedda allowed for his own planet and people to be the victims of such corporate destruction might seem unclear, but he later admitted under New Republic interrogation that he had accepted ongoing bribes from both companies as well as significant percentages of their trading profits."
―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire[1]

The Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative bribed Mas Amedda while mining on his homeworld.

After the death of Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine[1] in 4 ABY,[3] Levinous was among those who declared themself Emperor, although he gained little support and was swiftly arrested. After surrendering the Empire to the New Republic[1] in 5 ABY,[3] Amedda revealed his ties to the Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative during interrogation by the Republic. This information was recorded in Mas Amedda, Interrogation Note #254, which was stored in the "Imperial Prisoners" section of the New Republic Archives.[1]

In 35 ABY,[4] the historian Beaumont Kin wrote about the Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative in[1] his[5] book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire. He discussed the company's mining of Champala and cited the interogation note, later attributing Levinous's rank almost entirely to his connections with Amedda and the collective rather than any talent he held, citing it as an example of how counter-productive the Empire's decision making process was.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Champalan Imperial Mineral Extraction Initiative was mentioned in the 2024 reference book Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, which was written by Dr. Chris Kempshall.[1]
