The Chatos Academy was one of the many ancient and semi-legendary organizations which studied the Force in the time before the Jedi Order. Originating on the planet Palawa, the Chatos Academy was believed by some historians to be a forerunner to, or at least an influence on, early Jedi teachings.
History[]
Established on the planet Palawa[1] before the dawn of the Galactic Republic or the Jedi Order, the Chatos Academy led its students in the study of the Force. The Academy's graduates were known as Paladins[2] and became part of an order which some historians concluded may have influenced the idea of monastic Jedi Knights several centuries later.[3] The Archives of the Jedi Temple had records of the Chatos Academy in 990 BBY,[4] as did the personal collection of Darth Plagueis in 67 BBY.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
In the rough draft of the script for A New Hope, Leia leaves the Palace of Lite to study at the "Academy at Chathos", which is located in a place called Yuell on Aquilae. Her studies are cut short by the attack of the Galactic Empire, and she is rescued by Annikin Starkiller. One of her handmaidens stays at the Academy as a decoy. The "Academy at Chathos" is also called the "Academy of Chathos" in one instance.[6] In the first draft, Aquilae was renamed Townowi, but the Academy at Chathos is unchanged.[7] Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays misspelled Chathos as Chatos.[8]
