The Chiss Expansionary Fleet was the external defense fleet of the Chiss Ascendancy's Expansionary Defense Fleet that was charged with patrol of the Ascendancy's borders. The Expansionary Fleet was governed by the Expansionary Fleet's charter which only permitted observation and exploration in the regions around the Ascendancy. Both the Expansionary Fleet and the Defense Fleet wore specialized black Defense Fleet uniforms. When a Chiss warrior was accepted into the Expansionary Fleet, they were made a merit adoptive of a Chiss family. Unlike the starships of the Defense Fleet which were equipped with lesser transmitters and relied on a colony system's network of boosters and repeaters, the Expansionary Fleet vessels were equipped with more powerful transmitters.

During the Great Galactic War, the entire Chiss Expansionary Defense Force acted as an external defense military force, similar to the Expansionary Fleet of 27 BBY.

Behind the scenes

The Chiss Expansionary Fleet first appeared in the 2006 Star Wars novel Outbound Flight, written by Timothy Zahn. The 2004 novel Survivor's Quest erroneously referred to the Chiss Expansionary Fleet as the Chiss Defense Fleet.
