"You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"
―Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Anakin Skywalker — (audio) Listen (file info)[4]

The Chosen One was the central figure in the Jedi prophecy that foretold the coming of the one destined to bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith. The Chosen One was born during the era of the Galactic Republic; Anakin Skywalker, the son of Shmi Skywalker, was exceptionally strong with the Force, possessing an unprecedented level of more than twenty-thousand midi-chlorians in his blood. As a result, Skywalker had the potential to become the most powerful Jedi in galactic history. The Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious believed that Skywalker would eventually surpass both himself and Grand Master Yoda. The Father, one of the three Mortis gods, would seek to recruit Skywalker as his successor, believing that only the Chosen One had the strength to maintain the balance between his children, the Son and the Daughter in the realm of Mortis.

Discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in 32 BBY, Skywalker joined the Jedi Order and ascended to the rank of Jedi Knight following his apprenticeship under Obi-Wan Kenobi. During the Clone Wars, however through the manipulations of Darth Sidious, Skywalker turned to the dark side of the Force and became the Sith Lord Darth Vader in 19 BBY. He then participated in the systematic purge that rendered the Jedi virtually extinct. With the Galactic Empire rising to dominate the galaxy, Kenobi endeavored to train Vader's child, Luke Skywalker, believing the prophecy would be fulfilled by the son instead of the father. However, Luke believed that his father could be turned back to the light side of the Force. During the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Vader sacrificed himself by destroying his Sith Master in order to save his son. The deaths of the last two Sith Lords fulfilled the Jedi prophecy, restoring balance to the Force. With his destiny complete, the Chosen One passed into the Force as Anakin Skywalker.

History[]

Origin[]

"Only through sacrifice of many Jedi will the Order cleanse the sin done to the nameless. The danger of the past is not past, but sleeps in an egg. When the egg cracks, it will threaten the galaxy entire. When the Force itself sickens, past and future must split and combine. A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored."
―A Jedi prophecy[6]

An ancient Jedi prophecy foretold that the Chosen One would bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith.

An ancient Jedi prophecy,[7] made by an ancient Jedi mystic and recorded on a holocron,[6] foretold that the Chosen One would restore balance to the Force by destroying the Sith.[4] The prophecy also predicted that the Chosen One would also become one of the strongest Force-sensitives in the galaxy, rivaling the power of the most legendary champions of the Jedi Order.[8] The prophesies of the Sith also believed in a coming figure who would be born of the Force. Known to those writings as the Sith'ari, the Sith foretold such an individual would come forth and hold tremendous power, much like the Jedi believed for the Chosen One. Based on his research, Historian Beaumont Kin believed the Sith'ari and Chosen One were the same figure.[9]

Although the Jedi had long spoken of balance in the Force, there was no consensus on what that meant for the galaxy. Some people thought that the light side of the Force and the dark side of the Force had to be equal in order to create balance, while others believed that the light could be the Force in its natural state, making the dark side the cause of imbalance.[7] In contrast to the Jedi's view of balance, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious believed that the dark side needed to be free, and the light side suppressed, in order to achieve balance in the Force.[10]

The Sith's greed and desire for power led to infighting among their ranks, resulting in their near-extinction[11] and defeat by the Jedi.[12] By the time of the Invasion of Naboo, the Jedi Order believed that the Sith had been extinct for a millennium.[1] Unbeknownst to the Jedi,[7] the Sith Lord Darth Bane survived the ancient Sith's destruction and ultimately chose to pass his knowledge to a single apprentice, Darth Zannah,[13] thereby forming the Rule of Two[11] that would limit the Sith ranks to a Sith Master and an Sith apprentice for the next thousand years.[1]

Apart from the Jedi prophecy, the legend of the Chosen One was connected to three ancient Force wielders[14]—"the Ones"[15] known as the Father, the Son, and the Daughter—who resided in the ethereal realm of Mortis. The Father maintained balance between the Daughter and the Son, who embodied the light side and the dark side of the Force, respectively. The Father sought to recruit the Chosen One as his successor, believing that only he would have the power to preserve the balance on Mortis in the event of the Father's death.[16]

The rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker[]

Qui-Gon Jinn's discovery[]

"Obi-Wan. Promise…Promise me you will train the boy."
"Yes, Master."
"He…is the Chosen One. He…will bring balance. Train him…"
―Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi — (audio) Listen (file info)[1]
5MinuteStories-Anakin-and-Qui-Gon

Qui-Gon Jinn discovered Anakin Skywalker, the prophesied Chosen One, during the fall of the Galactic Republic.

Forty-one years before the Battle of Yavin,[17] Shmi Skywalker gave birth to a son named Anakin Skywalker. Though she could not explain it, there was no father involved in her child's conception.[18] In the first decade of young Skywalker's life, both he and his mother lived in slavery on the Outer Rim world of Tatooine. Originally the property of Gardulla Besadii the Elder, the Skywalkers traded owners after the Hutt lost them in a podracing bet with the Toydarian junk dealer Watto. During his service to Watto, Skywalker befriended Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn,[1] who was known for his fascination with prophecies.[6]

Jinn, having gauged Skywalker's inherent strength in the Force with his own observations, had an analysis made of the boy's exact potential through a blood test. The results confirmed that Skywalker had an unprecedented quantity of midi-chlorians in his cells; his exact count remained unknown as the readings were off the chart. However, the test did confirm that Skywalker had over twenty thousand midi-chlorians, at least, exceeding the count of every Jedi including Grand Master Yoda. In addition, the secret of Skywalker's miraculous birth was revealed to Jinn by Shmi.[1]

High Council Chamber

Jinn brought Skywalker to the Jedi Temple, determined to see the Chosen One become a Jedi Knight.

Faced with such revelations, Jinn came to the conclusion that Skywalker was in fact a vergence in the Force[1]—the Chosen One destined to bring ultimate balance.[6] After Skywalker was liberated from slavery, he accompanied Jinn to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, hoping to begin his training as a Jedi. The Jedi High Council assessed Skywalker's potential with the Force through a series of tests; additionally, they sought to understand his mindset. While his future was clouded in their Force vision, the High Council sensed a great amount of fear within him, including the fear of loss that he felt for his mother who remained a slave on Tatooine. Yoda was concerned that Skywalker's fear would lead him to develop other traits that could lead him to the dark side of the Force, such anger and hate which, in turn, led to suffering. As a result, the High Council declined to authorize Skywalker for training due to his age[1] and the fear within him.[19]

You will be a Jedi

Following the death of Jinn, Skywalker began his Jedi apprenticeship under Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Jinn remained adamant in his belief that Skywalker was prophesied Chosen One. He had intended to train Skywalker himself, but was fatally struck down by the Sith Lord Darth Maul during the Battle of Naboo in 32 BBY.[2] When Jinn died, his last words were spoken in acknowledgment of Skywalker as the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. His apprentice, Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, promised to train Skywalker.[1] The High Council conferred the rank of Jedi Knight on Kenobi, who defeated the Sith Lord who killed his master, and also permitted him to train Skywalker as his Padawan.[1] Yoda was the lone dissenter in the High Council's decision to accept Skywalker into the ranks of the Jedi Order.[8] Regardless of whether the boy was the Chosen One, the Grand Master was certain in the danger that he sensed Skywalker's training would bring.[1] During the funeral of Qui-Gon Jinn, Skywalker learned of the High Council's decision to allow Kenobi to train him. Kenobi assured Skywalker that he would become a Jedi.[1]

Training the Chosen One[]
"If the prophecy is true, your apprentice is the only one who can bring the Force back into balance."
―Mace Windu, to Obi-Wan Kenobi[20]

Already at a young age Skywalker was exceptionally skilled in the Jedi arts.

During his apprenticeship under Kenobi, Skywalker struggled to live up to the expectations not only of being a Jedi, but the Chosen One as well. His status as the central figure in an ancient Jedi prophecy made it difficult for him to convince his peers that he was no different from them, which caused him to feel like an outcast. In addition, he grew to idealize the memory of Jinn, whose faith he hoped to vindicate by proving that he was the Chosen One indeed. Although he regarded his Jedi mentor as a father figure in his life, Skywalker believed that Kenobi failed to recognize his true strength in the Force. In time Skywalker became convinced that his power would rival that of the strongest Jedi Masters of his time, including Yoda and Mace Windu, as foretold in the prophecy of the Chosen One.[8]

As Skywalker ascended the Jedi ranks, the High Council observed his progress with a degree of concern. Windu commented that Skywalker possessed exceptional skills for his age, Kenobi however felt that his pupil lacked experience and humility. He was concerned that his pupil had developed hubris due to his advanced abilities, a trait which Yoda also perceived in other members of Skywalker's generation as well as the older, more experienced members of the Order.[20] Although Windu remained skeptical about Skywalker's status as the Chosen One,[21] he was mindful of the prophecy and believed that only Kenobi's Padawan was capable of restoring balance to the Force.[20]

Darth Sidious and his future apprentice

The Sith Lord Darth Sidious conspired to turn the Chosen One against the Jedi Order.

Another influential figure in Skywalker's life was Sheev Palpatine, a politician from Naboo. The public façade of Palpatine masked his true identity as Darth Sidious, who orchestrated the invasion of his homeworld by the Trade Federation to ensure his election as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.[8] In Sidious' view, the Force had blessed the Chosen One with power unrivaled by all except for the Dark Lord of the Sith. Aware of the Jedi's belief in the Chosen One's destiny, Sidious dismissed the prophecy as an incorrect interpretation of the meaning of balance in the Force.[10] Skywalker's potential for power, combined with his volatile temperament and other traits that conflicted with the Jedi Code, made him the ideal Sith apprentice to Sidious.[8]

The Sith Lord used his public identity as Chancellor Palpatine to gain access to Skywalker, creating a friendship that he exploited by undermining the Padawan's commitment to the Jedi Order.[8] As a result, Skywalker came to harbor doubts about Jedi doctrine.[10] He also grew ambitious and more arrogant due to the influence of Sidious, who assured the young Jedi that he was destined to become greater than all of the Jedi, including Yoda.[20]

Jedi Knight of the Republic[]

Skywalker excelled as a Jedi General, but struggled to meet the expectations of being the Chosen One.

The Clone Wars began with the First Battle of Geonosis[20] in 22 BBY.[2] Elevated to the status of Jedi Knight, Skywalker and his fellow Jedi became leaders in the newly formed Grand Army of the Republic, adopting the military rank of Jedi General. Unlike his peers, Skywalker quickly acclimated to his new role as a general in the Republic Military. He had struggled to live by the tenets of the Jedi Code despite his desire to overcome emotions that were considered unfit for a Jedi. As a soldier on the battlefield, however, he discovered that his power increased with his anger. Although he knowingly violated the Jedi Code more than once during the war, he justified his actions by convincing himself that he was serving the greater good of the Republic. As a result of the war and Chancellor Palpatine's influence, Skywalker began to truly believe he was the Chosen One, and therefore saw himself as the galaxy's savior. Skywalker's acceptance of his new self-perception helped to justify the actions he took that broke with the Jedi way.[8]

Though a newly promoted Jedi Knight, Skywalker was initially reluctant to train an apprentice despite it being considered one of the Order's greatest traditions. Nevertheless, following the Battle of Christophsis, Yoda assigned Ahsoka Tano as Skywalker's Padawan, believing he was ready to become a teacher. By instructing his own student in the Jedi arts, Yoda hoped that Skywalker would outgrow his inability to sever the emotional attachments that he formed with others.[22] It was also Yoda's hope that in gaining a sense of maturity that came with mentoring a young apprentice, Skywalker would finally become the powerful Jedi that the prophecy foretold.[8]

A test on Mortis[]
"You are the Chosen One. You have brought balance to this world. Stay on this path and you will do it again… for the galaxy. But beware… your heart…"
―The Father, to Anakin Skywalker[23]

During the war, Skywalker, Kenobi and Tano were lured to Mortis by the Ones. The Father sought to gauge Skywalker's strength in the Force, ultimately to determine if he really was the Chosen One, and the Son was likewise invested in discovering the Jedi Knight's true potential. Skywalker dismissed the Chosen One as a myth; nevertheless, his ability to force the Father's children into submission convinced the patriarch that Skywalker was indeed the one destined to bring balance to the Force, as only the Chosen One could tame the Son and the Daughter.[14]

KneelBeforeZod-Overlords

In the realm of Mortis, Skywalker endured a series of trials that tested his power as the Chosen One.

With his stewardship nearing its end, the Father entreated Skywalker to succeed him in maintaining the balance on Mortis. Skywalker declined the offer, however, and the Father warned him that his selfishness would have repercussions affecting the entire galaxy.[14] The Son set his own plan in motion by abducting Tano, forcing Skywalker to delay his departure in order to rescue his apprentice. Like the Father, the Son was certain that Skywalker was the Chosen One. Trapped in the realm of Mortis by his Father, the Son endeavored to turn the Chosen One to the dark side of the Force, thereby allowing him to escape into the greater galaxy. Skywalker refused under the false impression that the Son wanted him to become a Sith, to which the Son proclaimed that they would destroy the Sith as well as the Jedi.[24]

The Son succeeded in turning Skywalker by revealing the Jedi Knight's fate as a Dark Lord of the Sith through a series of Force visions, which compelled Skywalker to join the Son in the hope of altering the future. Their plan was undone, however, when the Father erased Skywalker's knowledge of the future. Following the destruction of the Ones, Skywalker returned to the galaxy alongside Kenobi and Tano, where they discovered that no time had passed in their absence.[23]

Fall of the Chosen One[]

"At my command, he turned against the Jedi Order. He massacred his brethren at their own Temple, giving no quarter. He had returned balance to the Force indeed—by drowning out the light and freeing the darkness."
―Darth Sidious, referring to Darth Vader[10]

The plots of the Sith took advantage of Skywalker's volatile emotions and uncertain loyalties.

During the final days of the Clone Wars, Skywalker was caught in the middle of an increasingly strained relationship between the Jedi High Council and the Galactic Senate's leader, Chancellor Palpatine. His friendship with the chancellor, as well as his appointment to the High Council's ranks by Palpatine's request, caused the Jedi elders to become more wary of Skywalker. Kenobi's faith did not waver as he was certain that Skywalker was the Chosen One whose destiny was to bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith. Neither Windu nor Yoda shared his conviction, however, and the Grand Master began to doubt the Jedi's interpretation of the prophecy.[4]

SithTeachings-Convergence

Sidious' machinations succeeded in turning Skywalker to the dark side, resulting in the creation of Darth Vader.

Through the manipulations of Sidious, who revealed his secret identity to the Jedi, Skywalker turned against the Jedi Order and embraced the dark side of the Force as the Sith Lord Darth Vader. His first act as a Sith apprentice was to attack the Jedi Temple[10] with the 501st Legion.[4] The Jedi within the Temple were massacred by their former colleague and his legion of clone troopers. With the exception of a few survivors, the Great Jedi Purge succeeded in destroying most of the Jedi Order through Order 66.[4] As a result, Sidious believed that the Chosen One had indeed returned balance to the Force by releasing its dark side through the suppression of the light.[10] The holocron containing the original copy of the Jedi prophecy claimed that the "sacrifice of many Jedi" was the only way in which the Jedi Order would "cleanse the sin done to the[6] nameless,"[25] without elaborating on which sacrificial event it referred to.[6]

Though wracked by grief over the fall of his former apprentice,[26] Kenobi confronted Vader on Mustafar and emerged as the victor of their lightsaber duel. Kenobi exclaimed that Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One but instead of bringing balance as foretold, he condemned the Force to darkness by joining the Sith. Having said his piece, which Vader replied with utter hatred for his former master, Kenobi left his fallen apprentice to burn on the edge of a lava bend. Vader managed to survive his grievous injuries and was retrieved by Sidious.[4]

Vader's condition necessitated an extensive cybernetic reconstruction rendering him more machine than man. His damaged body was encased in a life-sustaining suit of armor.[4] Sidious knew that Vader would be weaker than before as a result of his injuries. He therefore tested his apprentice's connection to the dark side by telling Vader that he had caused the death of his wife, Senator Padmé Amidala. The intensity of Vader's anguish and self-hatred revealed that he still possessed great power.[27] Vader would henceforth serve as his master's right hand, enforcing the Emperor's reign across the Galactic Empire.[4]

Dark times[]

"They called you the Chosen One, and you believed it. You believe it still."
―Darth Momin, to Darth Vader[28]

Vader became an infamous agent of the Emperor.

With the Emperor's blessing, Darth Vader claimed Mustafar as his own and oversaw the construction of his personal residence, Fortress Vader, with the help of Darth Momin. Although Momin was long dead by the time of the Imperial Era, the ancient Sith communicated with his modern counterpart through a mask imbued with his dark essence. Having manipulated Vader into constructing the fortress as a conduit for the power of the dark side, Momin was able to open a portal in the Force which ultimately facilitated his rebirth. The two Sith Lords battled each other in a cave beneath the fortress, and Momin revealed that he knew about Vader's former persona Anakin Skywalker.[28]

The reborn Sith Lord was aware that the Jedi believed Skywalker to be their prophesied Chosen One, and that Vader still considered himself as such despite his fall to the dark side. Scoffing at how Vader could have been gifted with the greatest power in the galaxy, Momin derided his opponent as a broken shadow of his former self. Furthermore, Momin taunted Vader by reminding him of his late wife and how he failed to save her in spite of his potential as the Chosen One. Vader ultimately defeated Momin, resulting in the ancient Sith Lord's second death.[28]

Maul dies but for real this time

Maul was killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who believed that Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, was the Chosen One.

Anakin Skywalker's fall from grace affected his former master's view of the prophecy.[29] Whereas Kenobi once believed his apprentice to be the Chosen One,[4] he became convinced that Vader was incapable of turning from the dark side.[3] He therefore placed his hopes in Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, whom he watched over during his years in exile and isolation on Tatooine. In time, Kenobi came to wonder if maybe the prophecy had been misread and Luke was truly the Chosen One, acknowledging that Luke could determine his own destiny.[8] When confronted by an old nemesis, the former Sith Lord Maul, Kenobi brought an end to decades of rivalry by striking down the Dathomirian. With his last breath, Maul asked Kenobi if he was protecting the Chosen One, to which the Jedi Master said he was, having come to believe that the prophecy would be fulfilled by Luke instead of Anakin. With that, Maul died believing that the victims of the Sith would be avenged.[29]

Luke Skywalker's instruction in the Jedi arts began during the Galactic Civil War. By then the Jedi were all but extinct as a result of the Great Jedi Purge[30] that began with Order 66.[4] Kenobi served as Luke's first master but was killed by Vader soon after, cutting short the younger Skywalker's apprenticeship. But in learning the secret to immortality, Kenobi was able to retain his identity in the Force after death. During the Battle of Yavin, he communed with Luke and told him to trust in the Force. Guided by Kenobi's spirit, Luke saved the Alliance to Restore the Republic by destroying the DS-1 Death Star Mobile Battle Station.[30]

Force Choke-DV6-2020

Sidious demeaned his apprentice's destiny while torturing him with the dark side.

Luke's next mentor was Grand Master Yoda who, despite deeming the son as reckless and full of anger like his father, agreed to complete the Jedi hopeful's training in the ways of the Force. Despite the progress that Luke made, he chose to leave Dagobah before his training was complete. Through the Force, Luke beheld visions of the future that led him to discover that his friends were in danger. Determined to help them, he disregarded Yoda's warning that only a fully-trained Jedi could defeat the Sith. Luke's decision led to his confrontation with Vader at Cloud City, where he ultimately learned the truth of his parentage[31] in 3 ABY.[2]

Vader's failure to save the Death Star caused Sidious to mock him with his title as the Chosen One. The Emperor castigated his apprentice for being the only one who survived the battle station's destruction. Sidious demeaned Vader's past as the Jedi Order's prophesied Chosen One, calling him "the one chosen to be held responsible" for the Empire's disastrous loss in the Yavin system. To this Vader vowed to correct his mistakes, ignoring the taunts of his master.[32] However, Vader was punished for his actions after the Battle of Hoth, having failed to prevent his son's escape on Bespin. In addition, he failed to kill Sabé, who physically resembled the late Amidala, and ignored his master's orders to report to him on Coruscant. Sidious overpowered Vader with the Force, using his apprentice's own method of punishment to torture him. As Vader struggled in vain to resist, Sidious asked how the Chosen One could be so weak, helpless and fraught with fear when he was destined to bring the Force into balance. The Emperor wondered who chose the Chosen One, and if they could choose another. Sidious compared Vader to a tool that he would discard when it was no longer useful.[33]

Prophecy fulfilled[]

"His final act was to hurl the Emperor to his death, not only redeeming himself but also finally restoring balance to the Force as the prophecy had foretold."
―Luke Skywalker, referring to Anakin Skywalker[34]

Vader died defending his son, killing Darth Sidious and fulfilling his destiny as the Chosen One.

Having narrowly escaped from his father,[31] Luke eventually returned to Dagobah, where a dying Yoda confessed that Vader was indeed Luke's father. The revelation that Vader and Anakin were one and the same sowed conflict within Luke, as he was unwilling to kill his own father. Armed with this knowledge, he believed that a remnant of his father's former self still existed within the shell of Vader. Neither Kenobi nor Yoda shared Luke's sentiment, however. Vader was more machine than alive, according to Kenobi, who saw his one-time pupil as a being who was "twisted and evil." Yoda likewise warned Luke that those who started down the path of the dark side would always be dominated by its power. Luke ultimately confronted Vader once more, as his masters told him he must, yet he remained steadfast in his belief that Vader could be redeemed. As the late Jedi Masters predicted, the Emperor used Luke's feelings to his advantage, having lured Luke to the DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station, where he sought to turn the young Jedi to the dark side during the Battle of Endor[3] in 4 ABY.[2]

The spirits of Kenobi and Yoda preserved Anakin's consciousness, allowing the Chosen One to live on through the Force.

Luke's power increased with his hatred,[3] and through his rage[35] he defeated his father in a lightsaber duel. Sidious betrayed Vader and attempted to replace him with Luke as his new apprentice.[3] However, Luke restrained himself at the last moment and, having defeated Vader and resisted the temptation of the dark side, claimed the mantle of Jedi Knight. His actions confounded the Emperor, who attacked Luke with a barrage of Force lightning.[35] Unable to defend himself, Luke begged his father for help while the Emperor slowly tortured him to death.[3] Unwilling to see his son die, Vader gave his life to save Luke, thereby dying as Anakin Skywalker.[36] Anakin ultimately fulfilled his role as the Chosen One[7] and brought balance to the Force,[37][38] fulfilling Qui-Gon Jinn's belief in the prophecy that foretold Anakin's destiny.[1]

Accepting his fate,[3] Anakin joined his Jedi mentors in death by becoming one with the Force.[36] Shortly after his funeral, the Chosen One appeared before his son, standing beside the spirits of Kenobi and Yoda as the Rebels celebrated their victory on Endor.[3]

Legacy[]

Darth Vader's heir[]

"For many years, there was balance and then I saw… Ben. My nephew with that mighty Skywalker blood. And in my hubris, I thought I could train him, I could pass on my strengths."
―Luke Skywalker[39]

The Jedi prophecy foretold the destruction of the Sith, but it never predicted the end of darkness.[40] Although Anakin Skywalker brought the Force back into balance,[37] the Jedi Order was decimated by his actions as Darth Vader,[30] leaving Luke Skywalker as the last of the Jedi.[3] Despite the fall of the Sith and the restoration of balance in the Force,[37] the dark side endured as remnants of the former Galactic Empire reorganized into the First Order under Supreme Leader Snoke,[41] a Force-sensitive being who was strong with the dark side.[42]

Kylo Ren Vader Helmet Chamber

Ben Solo was Anakin Skywalker's grandson, but as Kylo Ren he vowed to destroy the Jedi Order, fulfilling the legacy of Darth Vader.

A new generation of Jedi was trained by Luke, who saw his efforts destroyed by his nephew Ben Solo's fall to the dark side of the Force.[41] Throughout his youth, Solo struggled with the expectations of being Luke's nephew and the grandson of a prophesied Chosen One.[43] As Luke felt, there was a balance in the Force for many years until he saw his nephew.[39] Falling under Snoke's influence, Solo renounced his future as a Jedi and adopted the identity of Kylo Ren, becoming the Supreme Leader's apprentice and a warlord of the First Order.[43] He also became master of the Knights of Ren,[41]—an elite group of Force warriors that followed Snoke and the ways of the dark side.[44] Ren saw himself as the rightful heir to the tradition embodied by his fallen grandfather;[43] as such, he endeavored to be as strong as Vader.[45]

Luke disappeared soon after his nephew fell to the dark side,[35] leaving only fragments of a map that revealed the location of his self-imposed exile. During the Cold War, Ren's mother, Princess Leia Organa, endeavored to find her brother and recruit him to fight against the First Order.[41] Lor San Tekka, a member of the Church of the Force,[46] provided Organa's movement, the Resistance, with the last piece of the map to Skywalker.[41] San Tekka was a follower of the Jedi religion, despite his lack of Force-sensitivity,[46] and believed that the Jedi were needed to maintain balance in the Force.[41]

Balance preserved[]

"Bring back the balance, Rey, as I did."
―Anakin Skywalker's spirit, to Rey[47]
Force-bond battle

The fate of the galaxy would be decided by Rey, the granddaughter of Darth Sidious and Ben Solo, the grandson of Darth Vader, respectively.

Long after his death, Darth Sidious was revealed to have been resurrected and announced his return to a galaxy engulfed in another galactic war, this time between the First Order and the Resistance. Ren, having claimed the position of Supreme Leader by assassinating Snoke, tracked the phantom Sith Lord to the distant world of Exegol. Though he was determined to eliminate Sidious as a threat to his reign, the former Emperor unveiled a powerful military that would allow the Sith to be reborn and Ren to project First Order might across the galaxy, ruling all of it as Sidious' successor. In return, he urged Ren to kill Rey, a Jedi apprentice who was sired from Sidious' own bloodline.[47]

Ren, however, had grown close to Rey by virtue of their unique Force-bond.[43] Having learned that they were each one half of a[47] prophesied[43] Force dyad, Ren beseeched the former scavenger to take her place by his side, believing they could kill Rey's grandfather and claim the Throne of the Sith together. But after Ren renounced the dark side, restoring the persona of Ben Solo, Sidious pressed forward by attempting to seduce Rey to the dark side. Using his new fleet to threaten Rey's friends, Sidious almost forced Rey into striking him down, which would allow him to possess her body but for the intervention of Solo, who returned to Exegol to fight at Rey's side.[47]

BenSoloHealsRey-TROS

The balance that Anakin Skywalker created was preserved by his grandson, Ben Solo, and Rey, who was brought back to life because of Solo's sacrifice.

However, Rey and Solo's coming together revealed their nature as a dyad to Sidious, who drained their combined life force to revitalize his broken body, making the Emperor whole once more. Remembering his own death at the hands of Solo's grandfather, Sidious seized his former apprentice's descendant through the Force before casting the last Skywalker into a dark abyss. Though Rey was weakened by the energy drain, the voices of Jedi from generations past spoke to her, urging the last Jedi to rise up against the Sith Emperor. Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One who brought balance to the Force, also spoke to Rey, urging her to follow in his footsteps by restoring the balance.[47]

ReySkywalker

When the bloodline of the Chosen One ended, Rey took the name of Skywalker to honor the memory of her mentors, the children of the Chosen One.

Empowered by the spirits of all the Jedi, Rey vanquished her dark ancestor, preventing the rebirth of the Sith to preserve Anakin's balance and sacrificing her life in the process. Climbing his way out of the abyss, Solo found Rey's lifeless body and revived her with his own Force energy. The two embraced and shared a kiss before Solo died peacefully in Rey's arms, joining his family in death as the last of the Skywalkers. Though a Palpatine by blood,[47] Rey took the Skywalker name to honor her masters, Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.[48]

Behind the scenes[]

"Whether it's Hindu, Chinese or Middle Eastern, all the mythological heroes didn't have fathers. The fathers were the gods."
―George Lucas[49]

The prophecy of the Chosen One, who will bring balance to the Force was introduced in the 1999 film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the first installment of the prequel trilogy. The Chosen One was revealed to be Anakin Skywalker, who conceived by the Force itself via the mystical one-celled organisms called midi-chlorians completely without outside influence.[1]

Fan debate[]

Father or Son? Or Daughter?[]

Though there was some debate among the fans that Anakin Skywalker's son, Luke Skywalker, was actually the Chosen One since he caused his father to destroy Darth Sidious, the debate was settled when George Lucas himself confirmed in an interview that Anakin, even after becoming Darth Vader, was still officially the Chosen One, who brings Balance by ending the Sith rule over the galaxy.[5] Darth Vader: Sith Lord, a canon reference title, also states explicitly that "Anakin had fulfilled the destiny of the Chosen One."[50]

Nevertheless, based on material Lucas was involved in, the prophecy of the Chosen One was not necessary limited to a single person. In the episode of the Clone Wars TV show titled "Destiny," Yoda was told that he will train "who will save the galaxy from a great imbalance", referring to Luke Skywalker.[51] Furthermore, when he discussed his original plans for the sequel trilogy, Lucas stated that Princess Leia would became the Chancellor of the restored Republic, elaborating that she "ended up being the Chosen One".[52]

Anakin's birth[]

A popular fan theory also emerged, speculating that Anakin Skywalker may have been actually the result of Darth Plagueis' experiments, an ancient Sith, who was allegedly able to create life and defeat death by manipulating midi-chlorians, and whose story was introduced in the 2005 film, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.[4] The theory also heavily built on a scrapped scene from the early draft of the script for Episode III, which revealed Darth Sidious as Anakin's creator.[53] The 2012 Star Wars Legends novel Darth Plagueis combined both interpretations of Skywalker's birth stating that Plagueis was indirectly responsible for Anakin's creation yet the Force conceived Anakin as a way to stop the Sith.[54]

George Lucas himself initially said the mystery of the Chosen One's birth is up to the audience to interpret, since it bears no relevance to the outcome of the events.[5] However, in the interview given to Paul Duncan, author of the book Star Wars Archives: Episodes I-III, 1999-2005 he clearly stated that Anakin was created by the Will of the Force by the midi-chlorians, verifying the circumstances of Anakin's birth proposed in Episode I.[52]

Restoring Balance[]

With the release of the 2019 film, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker and the revelation that Darth Sidious returned from the dead, some fans question whether or not Anakin Skywalker did fulfill the Chosen One prophecy and brought balance to the Force or if the prophecy referred to Rey.[55] While the prophecy predicted the end of the Sith but not of the dark side of the Force,[40] Sidious' return demonstrates that the Sith Order wasn't technically destroyed until Rey kills Sidious with the help of all past Jedi, finally settling the ancient conflict of the Jedi and the Sith. However, in the film, Sidious did confirm his death and the Sith's destruction at Anakin's hands as he wanted the Sith to be reborn. Later, Anakin's spirit himself told Rey that he had already brought balance to the Force before and ultimately, Rey prevented the Sith's rebirth to keep the Force balanced.[47] In The Art of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, art director Rick Carter expressed his opinion that Rey was the one who fulfilled the prophecy rather than Anakin, stating that while that one would be a Skywalker, it didn't necessarily need to be one by blood.[56]

In the 2017 film, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker notes that there was a balance in the Force for many years until Ben Solo fell to the dark side.[39] It's indeed stated in The Rise of Skywalker that Anakin brought balance to the Force at least for a time, as he asks Rey to bring back the balance like he once did.[47] The reference book Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary furthermore clarifies that the Chosen One prophecy just foretold the destruction of the Sith, but not of the dark side of the Force itself, explaining the continued existence of dark side users such as Kylo Ren and Snoke.[40]

According to Chris Terrio, in George Lucas' words, the balance of the Force means that the dark and the light sides of the Force exist together,[57] Lucas himself said to writers of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series that to go to the dark side, an inherent element of individuals that must be overcome through discipline, was to imbalance the Force and referred to Balance as the light keeping the darkness in check, so one won't go to the dark side.[58][52] Terrio stated that Rey has achieved a balance for the current moment,[57] and J.J. Abrams affirmed this to be the case in the feature-length documentary Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker home video release — Featurette: "The Skywalker Legacy", clarifying that the balance in the Force is never permanent and has to be restored from time to time.[59]
