The clans of the Jedi Order were small groupings of ten to twenty Jedi Initiates that made up the classes of the academy within the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.
Overview[]
While clans had existed within the Jedi Order for centuries, it was not until the authoring of The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force by Grand Master Fae Coven and a series of other Jedi Masters that each clan was detailed and entered into the Order's canon. An Initiate entered into a clan when they reached age three or, in case of other species, the equivalent in maturity. Each clan was designed to appeal to the traits of its members, while placement of each student fell to the fosterers in the nurseries at the Jedi Temple, who watched the children since infancy. Jedi considered these clans as families, and, since they were colleagues in the Force, viewed their fellow students closer than any brother or sister. The bonds formed in these clans were essential for sustaining the Order. As each clan moved through the academy, it was tended to by an instructor responsible for the primary education of the members of their clan. While the academy taught specialized courses, instructors taught more basic lessons that reinforced the rest of their lessons.[1]
During the Order's history there were many, many clans including but not limited to:
- Bear Clan[1]
- Bergruutfa Clan[1]
- Boma Clan[1]
- Clawmouse Clan[1]
- Dragon Clan[1]
- Heliost Clan[1]
- Katarn Clan[1]
- Savrip Clan[2]
- Soaring Hawkbat Clan[3]
- Squall Clan[1]
- Thranta Clan[1]
- Tra'cor Clan[1]
- Wolf Clan[4]
- Two[5] clans[6] whose names were lost to history
Following the Great Jedi Purge and the Galactic Civil War, Luke Skywalker did not initially form clans as he began to rebuild the Jedi Order. Reflecting that leaving out this stage of instruction might have had something to do with two of his students' fall to the dark side of the Force, he reintroduced the idea with the launching of the Ronto and Veermok Clan following his recovery of a copy of The Jedi Path.[1]
These clans came to include the following:
