The Cleansing of Shalyvane occurred during the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance.

The bombing

"City was being lived in by my own people! Yes! Was great majesty, and wonderful comfort. But then, one day city die! Bombs fall from ships flown by people called 'Empire', yes? No reason then – no reason now. But bombs turn city to ruins, and turn my people to homeless nomads."

In 1 ABY, Imperial forces attacked the planet Shalyvane, homeworld of the Em'liy, for no apparent reason. TIE fighters and bombers targeted and destroyed the capital Chinshassa. The bombing was in fact part of plot elaborated by Darth Vader to infiltrate his agent Shira Brie into the Rebel Alliance. Unable to rebuild their city, the disgraced Em'liy people became simply the "Nomads".

Aftermath

"I found that the nomads had told the Empire that my tribe was in league with the Rebel Alliance. My drunken friend said that was why they had killed them all: men…women…children. And so I joined the rebellion."

When she infiltrated the Rebel Alliance, Shira Brie claimed she was a native of Shalyvane, and that its Human population had been wiped out by the "barbarian" Em'liy and their Imperial allies. The truth was discovered by Luke Skywalker some time after the Battle of Hoth, after the presumed death of Shira Brie during Battle of the secret armada.
