Club Penguin Star Wars Rebels Takeover was an event held within Disney's web-based children's MMO virtual world, Club Penguin. It began on January 22 and ended on February 4, 2015.[3] The event was initially announced on November 26, 2014 in an official blog post.[6]

Players had to complete tasks to earn exclusive clothing items. Players with a membership subscription could receive a lightsaber after completing every tasks, wielding it, they could duel against other players wielding a lightsaber and challenge the Grand Inquisitor to a lightsaber duel to earn more exclusive items. Some special features for the event were locked without a membership subscription. The storyline was heavily based on the first season of Star Wars Rebels.[7]

With this being the second Star Wars event, some clothing items from Club Penguin Star Wars Takeover returned and were available to purchase once again via the in-game shop.[8]

Does your child have what it takes to prove their skills and join the rebellion? The Club Penguin Star Wars Rebels Takeover is on now until February 4, 2015![3]

Players can rise up against the Empire by logging in to play.clubpenguin.com. Or by downloading the Club Penguin app, available on iOS and for Android devices.[3]

New additions and changes[]

In this event, many familiar characters from Star Wars Rebels made their first appearance in Club Penguin. All members of the Spectres were present as a penguin. The Grand Inquisitor also made his first appearance in the game as the main villain of the event.[7] Side characters from the show like Alexsandr Kallus, Maketh Tua, and Cikatro Vizago were also present during the event, but they didn't take part in the story. Instead, they made their appearances as costumes for players with membership subscription to purchase via the in-game shop, although they were still fully depicted as penguins in the catalog.[8]

The Club Penguin island was redesigned to look like Lothal throughout the event.

During the event, the Club Penguin island was redesigned to look like Lothal. Along with it, Imperial bases, housings, and Lothal architectures were also added as decorations. Many familiar vehicles from the show were also scattered around as a decoration piece.[7]

Similar to Club Penguin Star Wars Takeover, the lightsaber duel system was brought back for players with membership subscription. Players were given the chance to duel against the Grand Inquisitor.[9]

The storyline of the event was heavily based on the first season of Star Wars Rebels. Most of the missions were based on Mission in Capital City, but the final mission was based on Action at Mustafar.[7]

Plot summary[]

Kanan introduces himself and invites players to join them against the Empire.

Kanan Jarrus introduced himself and asked if the players would like to join the Rebels to fight against the Empire. After players accepted the invitation, they were give a mission tab that they could check for available missions given to them by the members of the Spectres. After completing each mission, players will be given a special reward. However, players with an active membership subscription were given extra rewards.[7]

The first mission was given by Sabine Wren, she tasked players to throw snowballs onto 8 Imperial posters. When players threw a snowballs onto an Imperial poster, the snowball turned into a Rebel mural. All players that completed the task were given Sabine's airbrush that they could wear as an accessory, while players with an active membership subscription also got Sabine's armor and helmet.[7]

For the second mission, players met up with Ezra Bridger, he stated that he know how it feels to have to prove himself to the crew. Ezra asked the players to retrieve 10 boxes of meiloorun fruit that the Empire stole. The boxes were scattered around the island. After players had retrieved all 10 boxes, Ezra sent a message that they need to get the food to the citizens before those "bucketheads" noticed anything. Kanan jumped in to say that the player still need to finish two more missions, then he'll notify on what to do next. All players were given Ezra's slingshot as a reward, while players with an active membership subscription also got Ezra's outfit and a wig that looked like his hair.[7]

Right after that, Garazeb Orrelios introduced himself and gave players the third mission. He told the player to destroy Imperial defense towers by throwing snowballs at it. There were three defense towers on the island. Two snowballs was enough to destroy a single defense tower. After all three Imperial defense towers got destroyed, Zeb said that the Ghost should have no problem flying. As a reward, all players got a flag with the phoenix crest on it that could be used as an accessory, while players with an active membership subscription also got a costume that resembled Zeb.[7]

Hera Syndulla introduced herself and complemented the player for being brave, she then asked the players to collect droid batteries for Chopper. Players needed to collect eight droid batteries. Similar to Ezra's mission, the batteries were scattered throughout the island. After collected all eight droid batteries, Hera told the player that she had a good feeling about them. All players were then given a hydrospanner as a reward, while players with an active membership subscription also got Hera's outfit and a headpiece that mimicked her lekku.[7]

For the last mission, the player needed to rescue Kanan from the Empire. After accepting the mission, the player was then teleported to a prison ship. Inside the ship, the player saw that Kanan had been captured inside a cell, he then told the player that it's a trap and to throw snowball at the oncoming stormtroopers. There were three blast doors with stormtroopers coming from it. The left blast door opened first, there were five oncoming stormtroopers from it. After the player took out all five stormtroopers from the first blast doors, the Grand Inquisitor appeared briefly to announce that the Rebel ends there shortly before the right blast door opened. Similar to first blast, the right blast door also consisted of five stormtroopers. This time, after taking out all five stormtrooper, all three blast doors opened. Both left and right blast doors had five stormtroopers each, but the middle blast door had six. After the player took down all stormtroopers, the cell that held Kanan was unlocked. Kanan told the player that they really proved themselves, he added that they need to get out of there before the Grand Inquisitor comes down in person. As a reward, all players were given a special background for their player card, while players with an active membership subscription also got a blue lightsaber, Kanan's outfit, and a wig that resembled his hair and facial hair.[7]

Players with an active membership subscription got an exclusive gameplay and an extra progression bar to unlock even more special items. With the obtained lightsaber from Kanan, players could duel other each other and the Grand Inquisitor. The duel system worked similarly to the game of rock, paper, scissor. The progress bar would add regardless if the player won or not. There are six checkpoints in the progression bar that the player could collect the prizes from. The items are a 614-AvA speeder bike as an igloo furniture, a purple lightsaber, Hera's blaster, dual lightsaber, an igloo design based on the Ghost, and a costume that resembled the Grand Inquisitor along with his lightsaber.[7]

Gameplay[]

The gameplay was mainly a point and click, it was fairly simple and intended for a younger audience to experience. The missions had players exploring around the island to find and do specific things depending on the active mission they were on. With each completion, players were given a special exclusive rewards, although players with an active membership subscription got an extra reward.

The event also had an exclusive gameplay only for players with an active membership subscription, it was the lightsaber duel. The exclusive game mode worked similarly to a game of rock paper scissors. Players could duel other people with a membership or challenge the Grand Inquisitor to progress and get even more exclusive rewards.

Trivia[]

  • Two weeks before the party started, the Ghost became visible in the telescope at the lighthouse. Then it became closer the nearer the event became.[10]
  • Although he was not present in the story or event, Jabba appeared as a logo for the coffee shop called Javva the Hutt. "Javva the Hutt" was also a word-play on Java, an island in Indonesia popular for its coffee and Jabba's title as a Hutt, Jabba the Hutt.[11]
  • Similarly, Max Rebo was also not present in the story or the event, but his name was used as the name of the night club called Rebo Nights.[11]
  • Despite being mentioned in the story, the only time Chopper appeared as an astromech was in the player card background obtained through the completion of the event.[12]
  • At the dock, there was a hidden message in Aurebesh, when translated, it read, "There are more mysteries to be seen. Keep an eye on the wilds." It was soon revealed that it was a hint for an upcoming event in Club Penguin.[13]
