The planet Malastare, homeworld of the Dug species, was colonized by the Gran hundreds of years prior to the Imperial Era when the Galactic Republic was considered as the "Old Republic." The Gran colonized the planet as they expanded across the galaxy, with the Dugs violently resisting the colonization attempt. Despite the superiority of Gran technology, the Dugs were resourceful and relentless, catching the Gran colonists unprepared. The war's escalation resulted in an intervention by the Republic, and due to the Gran's influence in the Galactic Republic government, were effectively awarded the planet.[1]
By the time shortly prior to the Clone Wars[2] in 22 BBY,[3] the Gran had established the Gran Protectorate[4] and the Congress of Malastare.[2]
