Plot summary[]
Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard feels that something is wrong on his ship. He asks Commander Bragh to discreetly check in on the dutiful Imperial Security Bureau Lieutenant Kith Alaytia after she supposedly started interrogating the New Republic prisoner Pessin. He is approached by the Anzati mystic Reyna Oskure, his contact with the dark side cult the Acolytes of the Beyond, who informs Adelhard that the Acolytes are prepared to enter his service.
In considering his place among the Imperial Remnants, he feels that the faction leaders, such as Rae Sloane, Kenner Loring and the Acolytes' Yupe Tashu will each make claims for power. He sees his own position as showing the other factions how to behave so that they do not fall victim to the same mistakes that fractured the Empire in the first place. One way in which he intends to improve is by aligning with unconventional allies, such as the Acolytes of the Beyond and the Spice Runners of Kijimi. Adelhard joins the Acolytes in a ceremony and asks Yupe Tashu what the Acolytes can offer him and his new Empire. As for the Spice Runners of Kijimi, Adelhard prepares to offer them significant power and profit, in spite of their clear wishes to kill him. He sees the Spice Runners as the perfect pawns.
He finds other Imperials to be harder to sway to his cause. For instance, Grand Admiral Sloane wants Adelhard to join other factions on Akiva, but he asks her to bring forces to him in the Anoat sector instead. With Grand General Loring, he conspires to move forces to Malastare, directly defying the wishes of Admiral Sloane. Adelhard finds Loring to be too much of a blowhard to easily accept the Grand Moff's invitations.
Later, he asks Oskure to leverage a contact of hers on Malastare. While Loring inquires about a leak from a traitor, some of his stormtroopers receive a transmission asking to relay a message from Adelhard, carrying a powerful threat. This causes Loring to become much more agreeable to whatever Adelhard asks.
After Adelhard's transmission with Loring, Bragh informs Adelhard of an important update to his mission. He leads Adelhard to the body of the New Republic pilot, who has been shot three times in the back.
