Crab gliders were a type of carrion-eating creature found on the gas giant Bespin. When predatory packs of velkers attacked and fed on giant beldons in Bespin's breathable upper atmosphere, it attracted crab gliders, which then fed on the beldon's corpse until it began drifting toward Bespin's toxic planetary core. Crab gliders had brown shells with a patch of tan on their underside and two antennae and two black eyes on the head. The creatures had ten segmented limbs with webbing between them and claws on the ends.
At some point after 34 ABY, an illustration of a crab glider was included on a map of Bespin thought to have been drawn by the artist Gammit Chond based purely on travelers' tales. The map was later restored and published by the Graf Archive.
Behind the scenes
Crab gliders were first mentioned in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars. The creatures were then pictured in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, which was written by Emil Fortune and illustrated by Tim McDonagh.
