"The birds. I used to feed them in the training ground back on Coruscant. Song sparrows. Crown finches. You should have seen them flitting around the Great Tree, so many colors, darting this way and that."
―Ky Narec's voice to Asajj Ventress — (audio) Listen (file info)[1]

A crown finch was a type of bird. Jedi Knight Ky Narec fed crown finches and song sparrows, another type of bird, that lived in the training ground of the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant.[1] Around 23 BBY,[2] Narec's voice told his former Padawan, Asajj Ventress, that what he missed the most of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was feeding the birds, which fluttered with their various colors around the Great Tree within the temple.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Crown finches were mentioned in a flashback sequence in the audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost, written by Cavan Scott[1] and published on April 30, 2019.[3] The spelling of crown finches was confirmed by the audio drama's script release[4] on October 1 of the same year.[3]

  2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia - Join the Battle! places the recruitment of Asajj Ventress as Dooku's assassin to 23 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. As Star Wars: Galactic Atlas states that A New Hope begins in 0 BBY, Ventress' recruitment must have occurred in 23 BBY. Since Ky Narec told her about crown finches during one of her first missions in service of Dooku, the event must have occurred around 23 BBY.
