This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, call sign, or alias.

DS-61-9 was the call sign of an Imperial Navy TIE pilot who served[1] by 0 BBY. In that year, the Battle of Yavin occurred,[2] during which Alliance to Restore the Republic starfighters attacked the Galactic Empire's DS-1 Orbital Battle Station.[3] DS-61-9 was among the Imperial pilots who fought in the battle,[1] where Imperial TIE/LN starfighters attempted to defend the space station from the Alliance's starfighters. The Battle of Yavin ultimately ended in an Imperial defeat when the Alliance destroyed the battlestation.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The A New Hope set of the Star Wars Trading Card Game used this image to represent DS-61-9, but another card within the game's Battle of Yavin set attaches an image of the same starfighter to represent DS-29-4.

The name DS-61-9 was coined by 2002's A New Hope expansion set of the Star Wars Trading Card Game. Although the card identified DS-61-9 as the designation of the starfighter,[4] 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia would later identify that name as the pilot's call sign.[1] This article is written with the assumption that the latter source is correct.

The image used for DS-61-9's card is that[4] of a TIE/LN starfighter from the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[3] However, the card game's 2003 Battle of Yavin set also uses an image of the same starfighter to represent DS-29-4. That name was also coined as a starfighter designation,[5] before The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia no differently treated DS-29-4 as a pilot call sign.[6] This article treats both DS-61-9 and DS-29-4 as separate TIE pilots and avoids linking either of the pilots to the fighter shown in A New Hope.
