A TIE pilot operating under the call sign DS-73-3 served in the Imperial Navy by[1] 0 BBY. That year,[2] DS-73-3 participated in the Battle of Yavin,[1] where the Alliance to Restore the Republic attempted to destroy the Galactic Empire's DS-1 Orbital Battle Station superweapon,[2] and numerous TIE/LN starfighters attempted to defend the Imperial battlestation from the attacking Alliance starfighters. Ultimately, the Battle of Yavin ended with an Alliance victory and the Death Star's destruction.[3]
Behind the scenes[]

The image used by the A New Hope set of the Star Wars Trading Card Game to represent DS-73-3
The name "DS-73-3" was coined in 2002, in Wizards of the Coast's A New Hope expansion of the Star Wars Trading Card Game. Identified on the card as the TIE fighter,[4] the 2008 The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia would instead identify DS-73-3 as the fighter's pilot.[1] This article assumes the later source is correct.
Furthermore, the DS-73-3 Star Wars Trading Card Game image shows a TIE fighter[4] which was destroyed by Han Solo from aboard the freighter Millennium Falcon during that ship's escape from the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station in a scene from the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, that takes place prior to the film's later Battle of Yavin scenes.[3] This contradicts The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, which lists DS-73-3 as a TIE pilot active during the Battle of Yavin.[1] This article treats The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia as the accurate source and as such avoids linking DS-73-3 to any of the onscreen TIE fighters in A New Hope.
